Colon Cancer Screening Action Kit

Each year, 3,400 New Yorkers are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in NYC, causing over 1,000 deaths each year. Black New Yorkers experience a disproportionate share of this burden, due in part to the harmful health impacts of structural racism. Additionally, there has been a troubling rise of colorectal cancer diagnosis among people younger than 50 throughout the United States, increasing the urgency to speak to all patients about colorectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer screening rates have improved over the past decade, but recent data suggest that more than 30% of New Yorkers over age 45 are not up to date on screening. Maintaining a colorectal cancer screening schedule could reduce the disease's mortality impact.

This toolkit contains resources to help you engage patients in conversations about their colorectal cancer risk factors to determine screening needs and preferences and support implementation in practice.
