Advertising on the Ferry

A select number of permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Approval is not guaranteed.

No. We currently only accept money orders or certified checks payable to the NYC Department of Transportation, delivered in-person or sent by a trackable method.

No. The USCG-mandated Staten Island Ferry security plan requires you to exit the boat upon docking and reboard with the other passengers.

No more than twelve (12) persons, including cast and crew, are allowed with this permit.

No. We do not provide parking.

There is no limit on your time range. However, there is a limit of five date requests per application.

The Staten Island Ferry provides transportation service from Staten Island to Manhattan and back for residents, tourists, and other commuters. Permits are not issued to film/photograph during weekday rush hours (6am to 9:30am and 3:30pm to 7pm).

Permits will not be approved or issued for select City of New York events or holidays at the discretion of the Deputy Commissioner.

Drones of any type are not permitted within 100 yards of ferries and terminals.

No. Tables, structures, easels, tripods, or any props are not permitted. Only handheld film equipment is allowed.

No. We do not provide storage.

You may request to film or photograph only in the public areas on ferryboats and in the terminals.

No. Ferryboats are not available for private use.

No. No section of the boat can nor will be sectioned off for filming to avoid impediment to Staten Island Ferry commuters.

No. There is no guarantee that the same boat will make the trip back and forth during the time you have a permit to film.

A new permit and payment of filming fees must be submitted. You cannot use an existing permit on a different date due to weather or for any other reason.

No more than three people are allowed to distribute literature under the same permit.

No. The distribution of food and clothing is prohibited in our terminals and on our ferryboats.

The distribution of literature advertising alcohol on City property is prohibited pursuant to NYC Executive Order 44. In addition, literature advertising services for which payment is required are not permitted. Materials containing hate speech, inciting violence, or otherwise posing a safety risk to our employees or passengers will not be permitted.

Requests to distribute literature are limited to the Staten Island Ferry terminals of Whitehall and/or St. George. Requests to distribute literature at the following NYC DOT-owned piers may be granted upon Deputy Commissioner approval: Pier 11, East 34th Street, and the Battery Maritime Building (BMB) Slip # 5.

Permits are granted after reviewing the documentation submitted with the original application. If any changes are to be made to that documentation, a new application must be submitted no later than three to five business days before the scheduled distribution date.

Musical Performances in Terminals

Musical performances in the Staten Island Ferry terminals are reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis by NYC DOT in conjunction with the MTA Music Under New York (MUNY) Program.
