NEW YORK – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today announced that applications are now open for 2026 Open Streets partners. NYC DOT supports more than 200 Open Streets at locations throughout the city, including a record number at schools, to provide more public space for New Yorkers to promote economic development, support schools, facilitate pedestrian and bike mobility, and provide new ways for New Yorkers to enjoy cultural programming and build community. The Open Streets application is available online and easy to complete.

“Open Streets are a great way to celebrate your neighborhood and support local businesses by rethinking how our roadways can bring people together to build community and make city life even better,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “We are grateful for our community partners who work to keep these spaces safe, active, and entertaining and we welcome all who are interested in applying. We continue to develop more resources for our partners to equitably expand our program in neighborhoods across the city.”

The agency is also committed to redesigning existing Open Streets that benefit from traffic calming measures and streetscape elements to better prioritize pedestrians and cyclists and create world-class public spaces. This year's redesigns include:

  • 34th Avenue in Queens
  • 31st Avenue in Queens
  • Broadway in Manhattan
  • Woodside Ave in Queens
  • 29th Street Plaza in Queens
  • Montague Street in Brooklyn
  • Murdock Plaza in Queens

The Open Streets program also includes temporary, holiday-specific Open Streets such as Holiday Open Streets on Fifth Ave and the forthcoming Halloween and Harvest-themed Trick-Or-Streets events through October. A full list of Trick-or-Streets events taking place this month, along with a map of car-free streets for Halloween is available at nyc.gov/TrickOrStreets.

Open Streets Application

NYC DOT works with community-based organizations, educational institutions, and business groups to execute Open Streets citywide. The Open Streets program empowers community partners to become stewards of their local streets by developing operational plans to manage the public space for multiple uses, including outdoor dining, cultural programming, and outdoor learning/recreation for schools. NYC DOT works with partners and local stakeholders to ensure loading, deliveries, and emergency access is coordinated as part of the Open Streets’ operations.

The Open Streets application is for organizations that want to manage their own Open Street. Returning Open Streets partners may use previously submitted data based on their application ID for an even more streamlined application process.

For those interested in learning more about the 2026 Open Streets application, NYC DOT will hold a virtual information session on Thursday November 13, 2026, at 2:00pm. To join the information session, register online.

“Open Streets has allowed hundreds of families in the Park Slope community to come together and play, dine and shop on 5th Avenue every Saturday,” said Brendan Byrnes from 5th Avenue Open Streets Merchants Association. “I cannot overstate the energy and vibrancy that Open Streets brings to 5th Avenue through live music, kids activities, and expanded outdoor dining every Saturday!”

“Open Streets has truly transformed our block into more than just a passageway, it has become a gathering space where neighbors connect, families feel safe, and children can experience the kind of joyful, outdoor childhood every child deserves, even if they live in a ‘concrete jungle’,” said Nkosa Barrett from the Decatur Block Association. “Through this initiative, we’ve not only built a stronger sense of community, but also restored a shared pride in our neighborhood. Open Streets has given us the opportunity to reimagine what our streets can be, vibrant, welcoming, and rooted in togetherness.”

“Open Streets is a tradition in our community. This legacy keeps Communities engaged and blocks safer for all to enjoy,” said Jon Paul Dyson from the Community League of the Heights. “We Love Our Block.”

“Since 2021, Open Streets has been crucial for Salsa Stories to activate public spaces with programs that promote diversity and cultural heritage preservation through arts, music, community building, and education,” said Bianka Cypriano, Director of Closed Frame Productions. “This partnership with DOT allows us to transform NYC streets into free public stages. Together we design open spaces that promote accessibility, while considering how language barriers and disabilities reflect the participants’ diverse identities. Open Streets is a pillar that supports Salsa Stories commitment to grow foot traffic in environmental justice areas through cross-borough cultural programs that cater to our communities where they are.”
