Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS’s) have both an audible walk indication and tactile arrows on the pushbuttons that vibrate during the walk interval to assist visually impaired pedestrians to cross the street at signalized locations. You can submit a request to repair or install an APS. DOT works closely with the Mayor’s Office of People with Disabilities (MOPD) and Pedestrians for Accessible and Safer Streets (PASS), a coalition group representing the visually impaired, to identify locations where APS's are feasible. Due to a large volume of requests and types of studies, the timeframe to complete a study varies and may take from four to seven months. The Borough Commissioner will notify you of the results at that time.

Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI’s) provide an exclusive “Walk” period at the start of the signal phase to give pedestrians a head start to begin crossing the street prior to the parallel movement of traffic getting a green indication. DOT installs LPI’s at signalized intersections throughout the city where our traffic engineers have determined that they are warranted. Due to a large volume of requests and types of studies, the timeframe to complete a study varies and may take from four to seven months. The Borough Commissioner will notify you of the results when the study is completed.

Left turn arrows are installed at signalized intersections for drivers to make an exclusive left turn while opposing traffic has the red signal. Left turn studies are usually completed in 6 months. The Borough Commissioner will notify you of the results when the study is completed.

Multi-Way Stop signs are installed after DOT completes an engineering study at intersections that already have a stop sign installed in one direction. They force all motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists to stop at the intersection before proceeding. Due to a large volume of requests and types of studies, the timeframe to complete a study varies and may take from four to seven months. The Borough Commissioner will advise you of the results when the study is completed.

An intersection control study is conducted for a new signal request to determine if additional traffic control measures are warranted at a location. The latest edition of the MUTCD lists nine conditions (or “warrants”) for DOT to consider. (To learn more about the MUTCD requirements, please visit: MUTCD on the FHWA website). Some of the data collected are pedestrian and vehicular volumes, crash reports and geometric characteristics of the location. Due to a large volume of requests and types of studies, the timeframe to complete a study varies and may take from four to seven months. Pedestrian Countdown Signals (PCS’s) display to the pedestrians the number of seconds remaining to cross the street safely while traffic is stopped. An intersection control study is conducted to determine if Pedestrian Countdown Signals are appropriate for a location. Due to a large volume of requests and types of studies, the timeframe to complete a study varies and may take from four to seven months. The Borough Commissioner will advise you of the results when the study is completed.

ALERT:Please call 311.This is not the correct form to report a signal defect. DOT’s contractors are required to arrive at the scene of the most serious problems (e.g., all lights out, or a knocked-down pole) within two hours of notification. If a bulb is out, contractors are required to respond within 48 hours.

Signal Timing cycle lengths (the time required for one complete sequence of signal indications) usually fall between 60 and 150 seconds. The timing plan for each signal is determined based on traffic volumes and traffic patterns of the location. If you believe the timing of a movement or pedestrian crossing needs to be changed, DOT will investigate to determine if an adjustment in the signal timing is needed. Due to a large volume of requests and types of studies, the timeframe to complete a study varies and may take from four to seven months. What is a Speed Reducer?

A Speed Reducer is a type of physical traffic calming device used by NYC DOT to lower the speed of motor vehicles along specific street segments. Speed Reducers are constructed from asphalt at a height of either 3 or 4 inches, and are accompanied by warning signs and roadway markings.

News Stands are part of the coordinated street furniture franchise. They are fabricated from stainless steel and glass. The product displays can be customized by each operator from a standard kit of parts.

Bus stop shelters are part of the coordinated street furniture franchise that was awarded to Cemusa, Inc., in 2006. The award–winning, stainless steel and glass design provides seating and protection from the elements for bus users.

In response to the lack of public restrooms in New York City, JC Decaux, the coordinated street furniture franchisee, will install twenty automatic public toilets. Public Toilets are state–of–the–art facilities that offer comfort, hygiene, accessibility, and security to the public.

DOT, in coordination with our Coordinated Street Furniture vendor, JC Decaux, has installed bicycle parking shelters around the City. Each shelters contain stainless steel bike racks for eight bikes. The design closely resembles the bus shelter, using the same high–quality materials. The ad panels are used to display the annual NYC Bicycle Map and public service campaigns.

NYC DOT provides free and public seating throughout the five boroughs. NYC DOT installs and maintains benches on sidewalks and plazas.

NYC DOT provides free public bicycle parking on New York City sidewalks and streets.

Bike Corrals are bike racks installed in the curbside lane of the street instead of on the sidewalk. Anyone can request a Bike Corral, but every Bike Corral needs a maintenance partner.

Street Seats is a citywide program where partners apply to transform underused streets into vibrant, social public spaces. Anyone can request a StreetSeat, but every Street Seat needs a maintenance partner.

The Leaning Bar located at Select Bus Service and other high ridership bus stops, complements city Benches by providing another opportunity for transit riders to rest as they wait for the bus. Leaning can be especially appealing to people for whom sitting requires greater effort. NYC DOT installs and maintain leaning bars on sidewalks and plazas.

Wayfinding Maps and Signs (WalkNYC) is a collection of maps and other types of wayfinding signs that help you find your way around the city. You can report a problem with a wayfinding map, sign, or electronic screen on a sidewalk, in a plaza, or in a bus stop. You can report problems such as broken glass panels, non-functioning electronic screens, misaligned fingerposts, or incorrect information. A wayfinding map or sign is not a LinkNYC kiosk. LinkNYC kiosks provide public Wi-Fi and feature digital advertising screens.

The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) receives numerous requests for installation of traffic control devices in all parts of the city. DOT conducts a comprehensive examination of each request, including reviewing all agency records and crash data for the relevant location, observing site conditions, and conducting vehicle and pedestrian volume counts. Based on the type of traffic control device that is being studied, the timeframe for completion can be from four to seven months. About the BQE Project

New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) is in the early phases of its proposed reconstruction of the 80-year old section of the BQE that extends from the Atlantic Avenue interchange to the vicinity of Sands Street, and includes the triple cantilever structure, which carries two levels of traffic and the Brooklyn Promenade. This reconstruction project will address any existing structural deterioration, as well as improve the geometry of the highway with improved lane widths, truck clearances, and ramp design.
