NYC DOT to Host Final Round of Public Engagement for Bronx Harlem River Greenway, Unveil Proposed Route and Projects for Feedback

Seven-Mile Route Will Help Better Connect Bronxites to Their Waterfront and Connect Van Cortlandt Park to Randall's Island Park With Public Open Space and Bike Path

NYC DOT To Host Third and Final Round of Harlem River Greenway Engagement With a Presentation and Open House To Discuss Proposed Route, Project Concepts

NEW YORK – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced today dates for the final round of public engagement for a Harlem River Greenway in the Bronx as the city develops an implementation plan for the seven-mile cycling and walking route and new open space from Van Cortlandt Park to Randall's Island Park. As the culmination of more than two years of community engagement and planning alongside New York City Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks) and the Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), NYC DOT will unveil the full proposed route as well as a series of projects for the greenway.

"Bronxites deserve access to the Harlem River with new open space and trails for pedestrians and cyclists. Our planning process is centered around connecting residents to incredible green spaces in their borough and opening up new opportunities for safe cycling commutes and exercise," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "We appreciate all the feedback residents have provided so far and encourage Bronxites to come out and share their perspectives in this last round of workshops, as we finalize a plan to implement this greenway."

"Making the Bronx greener, healthier, and safer is a top priority, and the Harlem River Greenway will add essential greenspace to help Bronx residents connect with other parts of the city, get exercise, and avoid biking near vehicular traffic," said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. "We encourage New Yorkers to participate in the upcoming workshops to share their vision for the greenway."

"NYCEDC is committed to improving New York City's greenways and the expansion of the Bronx Harlem River Greenway will provide residents with new open space in addition to much needed safe biking infrastructure," said NYCEDC President & CEO Andrew Kimball. "Working alongside the community is critical for these developments and we look forward to our continued partnership with the Department of Transportation, the Department of Parks & Recreation, and the community in finalizing a plan that every Bronxite can be proud of."

The Harlem River Greenway in the Bronx will better connect Bronxites to their waterfront and connect Van Cortlandt Park to Randall's Island Park with new open space and a continuous seven-mile cycling route for commuters and recreational riders spanning Kingsbridge, Kingsbridge Heights, University Heights, Morris Heights, Highbridge, Concourse, Mott Haven, and Port Morris.

This planning process will build toward a new north-south transportation corridor that increases safety and mobility for all residents along the greenway. The project is one of six corridor plans NYC DOT has begun developing in partnership with NYC Parks, and NYCEDC to dramatically expand the city's greenway network to support safe and environmentally friendly active transportation links across the five boroughs.

The chosen routes were in part based on the Adams Administration's commitment to equity, bringing greenways that provide meaningful connections to job centers, academic and health institutions, and existing parks to historically underserved communities across the city.
