Reminder: Third Round of Public Engagement Workshops for Brooklyn Queens Expressway North and South Begin Monday

New York — New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez reminds New Yorkers that a third round of public workshops for BQE Corridor Vision: BQE North and South begins Monday, October 30, 2023. Through this visioning work, NYC DOT seeks to make community-driven recommendations to reconnect Brooklyn communities divided by the BQE, focusing on the spaces under and around the expressway from Sands Street to the Kosciusko Bridge and from Atlantic Avenue to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Workshops discuss design concepts developed in response to community feedback during the first two rounds of visioning.

“The community-driven concepts we are presenting include approaches to improve street safety and equitably invest in public space along BQE North and South,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Rodriguez. “We are excited to continue refining these design concepts as part of our efforts to address the effects of the BQE and reconnect communities across Brooklyn.”

The upcoming workshops mark the beginning of the third round of engagement for BQE North and South and will focus on “refining the vision.” NYC DOT is working with our groundbreaking Community Partners program to support engagement around the BQE Corridor Vision. In the previous round of community engagement, NYC DOT received feedback from community workshop participants, Community Partners, and other stakeholders on three design approaches, which explored the potential for the BQE to serve as infrastructure that connects communities. These design approaches included the BQE as a “Community Connector”, the “Multi-Modal Connector” and the “Green Connector”. In round three, NYC DOT will share design concepts which respond to community feedback collected thus far. After the workshops, the Community Partners will begin additional engagement through early next year to collect feedback from those who live and work in the BQE North and South areas. Through workshops and grassroots engagement, NYC DOT will gather input on these concepts to advance recommendations which could be included in a BQE North and South report to be released in 2024.
