DOT Now Accepting Applications for 2022 Open Streets

DOT now accepting applications for Open Streets and Public Space Programming; community-based organizations, schools and restaurant groups invited to apply

NEW YORK -- NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) announced today the launch of applications for both the 2022 Open Streets and Public Spaces Programming. Applications for Open Streets are open to community-based organizations, schools and restaurant groups until April 29, 2022, with additional application periods to follow. Selected applications will be announced on a rolling basis. Applications for Public Space Programming, which are free and can include arts, culture, fitness, or educational experiences, will be accepted until January 28, 2022, and selected applicants will be announced the following month. Previously announced public funding supports the program and will help it expand into underserved parts of the city.

"During the pain of the pandemic, New Yorkers helped us reimagine miles of our streets as lively spaces where we can dine out, meet with friends and neighbors, or just enjoy our neighborhoods," said DOT Commissioner Hank Gutman. "This fantastic program is getting better and better as we work hard to ensure people around the city can access these vibrant public spaces right in front of their doorsteps. Thanks to Mayor de Blasio and the City Council for making this kind of critical programming possible."

Applications to apply for both Open Streets and Public Space Programming are online and open now.

Public Funding
As part of the FY 2022 budget, DOT has received resources to help support the Open Streets program, including:

  • All non-profit organization Open Street partners can apply for funding to cover certain costs needed to run their program, such as operations or materials
  • DOT is fully managing Open Streets in underserved parts of the city, so the benefits of the program can reach every New Yorker
  • The Public Space Programming initiative will provide programming, such as arts, culture, fitness, or educational activities, on Open Streets and other DOT public spaces
  • DOT will provide Open Streets partners with the tools they need to succeed, such as metal barriers, traffic signs or movable furniture

Open Streets 2022
The City's incredibly successful Open Streets program transforms streets into public spaces that improve our neighborhoods. Community-based organizations, schools, and groups of restaurants can all apply to participate. Full or partial funding is available to all non-profit community Open Street partners. Educational and cultural programming will be brought to diverse communities citywide, with a focus on equity.

For new locations, DOT is looking forward to working closely with applicants to identify resources for the safe and successful execution of an Open Street. DOT strongly encourages all types of partners to apply for the program.

Returning Open Streets partners only need to complete a short-form application. DOT will work with returning applicants on streetscape changes if requested, such as planters, barriers, or street redesigns. Some existing Open Streets will continue to operate through this application period.

Public Space Programming 2022
Public Space Programming brings events and activities to car-free public spaces by partnering with organizations that host activities. These activities can include arts, culture, fitness, or educational experiences, and are always free and open to New Yorkers of all ages and abilities. Past participants have included The Public Theater, Street Lab, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, New York Chinese Cultural Center, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Funding for providers may be available and is based on their proposed fees. Regardless, DOT provides assistance with permitting and logistics to all providers.

New providers can apply to perform or host activities on Open Streets, pedestrian plazas, and other DOT public spaces. Successful respondents will be added to the Public Space Programming list and may be called upon throughout the season.

As with Open Streets, returning Public Space programming partners will only need to complete a short-form application.
