Citywide Mobility Survey
NYC DOT conducts a household travel survey called the Citywide Mobility Survey (CMS) to assess the travel behavior, preferences, and attitudes of New York City residents. The continuity of the survey allows us to track changes over time and analyze how factors such as COVID-19 have affected travel by New York City residents. NYC DOT takes a number of steps to ensure that the survey captures as representative a cross-section of New Yorkers as possible.

- The User Guide is based on the 2024 CMS methodology; however, the same approach applies to both the 2022 and 2019 CMS surveys, which use updated methods and weights consistent with this framework. Note that because of the timing of the American Community Survey (ACS) data release, the 2024 CMS targeted the 2023 ACS, while the 2022 and 2019 surveys targeted the ACS data corresponding to their respective reference years.

Surveys were also conducted in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. The 2017 and 2018 surveys consisted of an online or phone survey of roughly 3,000 New York City residents, who provided details of one day of travel. In the 2019 and 2022 surveys, as with the 2024 survey, participants could choose to download a mobile app and provide up to seven days of travel information. With all surveys, locations and identifying information have been removed from the public data sets to protect the privacy of participants.

These surveys, which did not include a trip diary component, were distributed to participants in the 2019 survey who had agreed to be re-contacted.
