NYC DOT Launches Meterless Pay-By-App Pilot Program for Commercial Parking on Portions of Sixth Avenue

Pilot Seeks to Improve Efficiency at the Curb, Benefit Small Businesses, and Modernize the Way the City Manages Metered Parking

Metered Commercial Parking Between 14th Street and 23rd Street Will Accept Payment Exclusively via the App, Side Streets Will Continue to Offer Physical Parking Meters

New York – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today announced a new pay-by-app pilot program for commercial parking on portions of Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. The innovative curb management program begins August 28th and will cover metered commercial spaces between 14th Street and 23rd Street on Sixth Avenue. Metered commercial parking on these blocks will accept payments exclusively via the trusted and easy-to-use ParkNYC app that allows users to pay for metered parking in just a few taps.

This first of its kind pilot in New York City will test the viability of managing the city's metered parking using new technology and without maintenance-intensive physical meters. The city has over 86,000 metered parking spaces that support businesses large and small. If successful, the meterless approach could reduce maintenance and operational costs, improve payment compliance, and allow the city to convert more parking spaces near businesses to metered spots – providing more parking turnover and cutting down on double parking.

"NYC DOT is bringing curb management into the 21st century," said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi. "Meterless parking allows DOT to leverage technology, providing a seamless parking experience and supporting local businesses."

"The pay-by-app pilot program is about innovation. Innovation in the way we manage curb space, the way we support small businesses, and the way we provide government services," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "We will test this promising technology and evaluate the ways it can benefit New Yorkers."

The pay-by-app payment model offers potential for greater ease of use for New Yorkers and a more modern and efficient way for NYC DOT to manage metered parking across the five boroughs. The benefits of the ParkNYC app include:

Convenience: No need to shuffle for coins or cards. Pay quickly and easily by phone.

Mobile Alerts: Know when your parking is about to expire and extend time remotely up to the allowable duration.

Keep It Moving: Pay for parking from the car, sidewalk, or anywhere – no receipt on the dash needed.

The ParkNYC app has over 1.7 million registered users and a 4.8/5 star rating in the Apple App Store based on 73,000 reviews. The free app is also available via Google Play. Users may also utilize ParkNYC via their desktop, tablet, or mobile browser by visiting parknyc.org. Users without a smartphone can sign up on parknyc.org and pay via phone by calling 1-844-442-0700.

NYC DOT will use the pilot to evaluate the viability of the exclusive pay-by-app model and whether it is suitable for further expansion. More information on ParkNYC is available at parknycapp.com.
