In anticipation of the busy holiday traffic season, New York City Transportation Department (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and NYC Transit President Howard Roberts today announced the 2007 Holiday Traffic Mitigation Plan. Revised and refined each year, the Holiday Traffic Plan is developed in coordination with NYPD and other agencies to address the increased vehicle traffic that often comes with the holiday season, starting the week before Thanksgiving until after New Year's Day. To help make holiday travel as smooth as possible, City officials, in coordination with regional transportation partners, have developed a series of initiatives designed to encourage mass transit use and facilitate vehicular travel in and around the City.

DOT Announces Expansion of Countdown Pedestrian Signal Study
New York City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced an expansion of the pilot program which analyzes the impacts on motorist and pedestrian behavior of “countdown signals,” which display the number of seconds pedestrians have to cross the street before the opposing vehicle traffic is given the right of way.

The workshops will be the basis for DOT to potentially develop plans to address any “park and ride” activity if such impacts result from congestion pricing in areas near subway stations and transit hubs outside the charging zone.
