NYC DOT Announces Church Avenue Truck Delivery "Window," Easing Congestion and Improving Parking Along Busy Brooklyn Commercial Corridor
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced plans to implement a new truck delivery "window" along Brooklyn’s Church Avenue from East 16th to East 21st streets to ease congestion along the busy commercial corridor, improve parking opportunities for all motorists and enhance deliveries for the many businesses in the area. Working with Brooklyn’s Community Board 14 and the Church Avenue Business Improvement District, DOT designed the plan to address the local community’s concerns about chronic traffic congestion on Church Avenue. The new parking regulations, set to begin on Jan. 18, 2011, designate 40 metered spaces for weekday truck deliveries from 7 a.m. – noon, freeing up the one-hour metered parking spaces in the afternoons for other motorists. Metered parking for passenger vehicles will continue to be available all day at 90 meters on Church Avenue and on side streets. By consolidating freight deliveries to morning hours, the initiative optimizes the use of curb space by encouraging deliveries to be made earlier in the day, reduces double parking and curb idling and supports the city’s economy by making it easier for business patrons to park. For businesses that need later deliveries, truck loading and unloading will be available until 3 p.m. on weekdays on Church Avenue between East 18th and 19th streets.

City Commissioners and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Give Away Safe Rides Home During the Holidays
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky today announced that thousands of free taxi, livery and public transit rides home will be given away this holiday season to encourage New Yorkers to be safe and plan ahead with a designated driver. The City is working with entertainment and music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, who leads all marketing initiatives for CIROC Ultra Premium Vodka, to help promote the use of designated drivers as a responsible part of holiday celebrations. A representative from CÎROC joined the Commissioners to announce the giveaway of free debit cards valued at $25 apiece for New Yorkers to use in taxis or at MetroCard or other transit-ticket machines this season, encouraging revelers to plan for a designated driver—be that a cab driver, a friend or a subway conductor. The giveaway is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to curb drinking and driving, reduce traffic crashes and make the city’s streets even safer, and is part of a growing list of resources available through www.youthemannyc.org, DOT’s campaign aimed at reducing drunk driving in New York City.

NYC DOT Seeks Proposals for Bike Share System
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) for private companies to provide a bike share system in New York City, establishing a publicly available, sustainable transportation option for New Yorkers and visitors. The RFP calls for a private company to bear all the cost and responsibilities for the system during an initial five-year period while sharing revenues with the city, and with no taxpayer funds being used for the system’s implementation, upkeep or maintenance. A system could be started by spring 2012, using the latest in bike share technology to provide secure and convenient bicycles on a 24-hour basis, and at publicly accessible prices. The RFP looks to encourage bicycle use as an environmentally-friendly and congestion-reducing transportation option, in keeping with the Mayor’s PlaNYC agenda for a greater, greener New York.
