New: Colon Cancer Screening Action Kit (2026)

Each year, 3,500 New Yorkers are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in NYC, causing about 1,000 deaths each year. Black New Yorkers experience a disproportionate share of this burden, due in part to the harmful health impacts of structural racism. Additionally, there has been a troubling rise of colorectal cancer diagnosis among people younger than 50 throughout the United States, increasing the urgency to speak to all patients about colorectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer screening rates have improved over the past decade, but recent data suggest that more than 30% of New Yorkers over age 45 are not up to date on screening. Ensuring that New Yorkers start screening on time and remain up-to-date with screening could reduce the disease’s mortality impact.

This toolkit contains resources to help you engage patients in conversations about their colorectal cancer risk factors to determine screening needs and preferences and support implementation in practice.

Patient Navigation

The NYC Health Department has a Colonoscopy Patient Navigator Program which trains and supports patient navigators who assist patients referred for colorectal cancer screening colonoscopies in hospitals. For more information about this program, visit Colonoscopy Patient Navigator Program Model.

Public health professionals can join the Citywide Colorectal Cancer Control Coalition for strategic direction and expertise on educational campaigns, clinical guidelines, and clinical practice improvement.
