Walk Ways

New York City is a city of walkers. The majority of young New Yorkers walk to school, to transit, and around their city each day. And now, schools can help even more students get active and get involved.

With New York City’s streets safer than ever, DOT is launching Walk Ways, a new program that will help schools tailor walk-to-school routes for their students and encourage students to learn about the benefits of walking. Schools can download lesson plans and connect with DOT safety educators for guidance and to customize route plans and walking tips for their individual schools.

Step One: Register your school to get involved

Register your school and you'll get an email to get you started.

Step Two: Choose your lessons

Download activities to do with your class or with the whole school. Use the featured curriculum from DOT’s recent competition, “We’re Walking Here.”

Step Three: Build a Walk to School Plan

Once students complete the activities, they will work with DOT safety educators to study their neighborhood and design their own special walk-to-school routes for themselves and their classmates.
