Safety Programs
Welcome to the School Traffic Safety Map Locator

The Department of Transportation has prepared a school safety map for each school serving elementary and intermediate school students having an enrollment of 250 students or more. The map shows the roadway network, school locations and traffic safety infrastructure, including designated school crosswalks. The school crosswalks provide the maximum degree of safety for children going to and from school. The school crosswalks are ladder striped and make the crosswalk more visible to drivers and help make the intersection safer. In addition, motorists are warned of the crossing with roadway markings, “SCHOOL X-ING” and signs having fluorescent yellow-green color. These crosswalks are where school children are recommended to cross. To see pictures and a detailed description of the information included on the map click here. (pdf)

Criteria used to Select Schools for the School Safety Program
Schools with an enrollment of 250 students or more are provided with school crosswalks. Below this school size there generally is an insufficient number of children crossing at any intersection to warrant special treatment. Nevertheless, traditional traffic controls exist at every intersection to provide for everyone's safety.
