School Traffic Safety Maps
DOT has prepared a school safety map for each elementary and intermediate school with 250 or more students. The maps show the roadway network, school locations and traffic safety infrastructure, including designated school crosswalks. School crosswalks are striped make the crosswalk more visible to drivers and help make the intersection safer. In addition, motorists are warned of the crossing with roadway markings, “SCHOOL X-ING” and signs having fluorescent yellow-green color. These crosswalks are where school children are recommended to cross.
Schools with an enrollment of 250 students or more are provided with school crosswalks. Below this school size there generally is an insufficient number of children crossing at any intersection to warrant special treatment. Nevertheless, traditional traffic controls exist at every intersection to provide for everyone's safety.
