NYC DOT Selects New York Water Taxi To Operate New, Temporary Commuter Ferry Service From Great Kills To Manhattan, With Service To Begin Monday, Nov. 26

Six morning and six evening boats to serve Great Kills, Wall Street and East 35th Street, $2 fare

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced that New York Water Taxi has been selected to operate the new, eight-week ferry service from Great Kills, Staten Island to Wall Street and East 35th Street in Manhattan, serving some of the City’s communities that saw the worst damage from Hurricane Sandy. The ferry schedule will include six half-hourly departures from Great Kills Park between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., bound for Pier 11 at Wall Street and continuing on to 35th Street, and six return trips in the afternoon, arriving in Great Kills every half hour between 5:40 p.m. and 8:10 p.m. (complete schedule below). Vessels will leave from a newly-installed temporary landing near the marina in Great Kills Park along Buffalo Street, and three parking areas within Great Kills Park will be available to ferry riders arriving by car. DOT has placed signs directing motorists to the ferry landing and electronic variable message signs announcing the service along key routes on the South Shore (sample below). Additionally, a shuttle bus provided by New York City Transit will link the ferry landing with the S78 and SBS S79 bus stop at Buffalo Street and Hylan Boulevard and parking areas. The one-way ferry fare will be $2.00, comparable to fares for temporary ferry routes established in the Rockaways after Sandy.

The service is intended to provide additional travel options and ease the commutes of residents in Great Kills, Midland Beach, Tottenville and other Staten Island neighborhoods where storm damage to vehicles and ongoing transportation impacts around the city has lengthened daily commutes for thousands of New Yorkers. It was made possible through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding, and the expedited bidding process was coordinated in conjunction with the Comptroller’s office. The ferry service will join the temporarily-expanded Atlantic Express X23 and X24 express bus service already serving Staten Island commuters elsewhere in the borough.
