Freedom of Information Law Requests

Due to office closings related to the COVID-19 State of Emergency, it is recommended that you submit FOIL requests electronically via NYC's OpenRecords Portal.

If you are unable to submit a request electronically, you may mail your request to: New York City Department of Transportation, Records Access Officer, 55 Water Street, 4th floor, New York, NY 10041.

Article 6 of the New York State Public Officers Law (FOIL) allows the public to submit written requests for access to Department of Transportation (DOT) records. Before making your request for DOT records, check if the information you are looking for is already available to the public. Search DOT street works permits Find information about Alternate Side Parking Check parking regulations throughout the city Find other DOT data, including on traffic advisories, bicycles, Staten Island Ferry, parking, low bridges, trucks and street network changes Check NYC OpenData for data from throughout city government

Making a FOIL Request

Some tips for a successful FOIL records search:

  • Be specific as to the records requested. Indicate the date or date range of records requested. If a request is location based, describe the location either as an address, an intersection or a block
  • The request must only be for records and not a question requiring an answer
  • Request only the records that you want

DOT charges 25ยข per page of paper documents returned. This fee covers photocopying and must be paid before documents will be sent out.
