Ferries
DOT owns and operates the Staten Island Ferry and works with other city agencies and private ferry operators to promote use of our waterways for transportation.
Bus Rapid Transit
Cities around the world have increased bus speeds and reliability by using Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). BRT is a system of dedicated bus lanes and other improvements that give buses priority on the streets and streamline the process of boarding a bus.
New York City Transit and DOT are beginning to lay the groundwork for a BRT network across New York City, complete with links to subways, ferries, and major destinations. The first generation of BRT in NYC is called "Select Bus Service" or SBS for short. NYCT and DOT invite the public to take part in interactive workshops and provide feedback on where new BRT routes should be established and how they should operate.

Buses
Public buses in New York City are operated by NYC Transit, a division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Get more information on bus routes and schedules. DOT maintains the streets, bus lanes, sidewalks and bus shelters.
Safe Routes to Transit
As part of PlaNYC the DOT is working to improve pedestrian and motor vehicle movement around subway entrances and bus stops to make accessing mass transit easier and more convenient.
