Our workers' rights public awareness campaign aims to educate New Yorkers about their workplace rights and to introduce DCWP—formerly the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA)—as NYC’s central resource for workers. Through broad and targeted advertising, we will reach both the workers who are covered by new City laws like Fair Workweek and Freelance Isn’t Free and workers who may not be aware of their rights like Paid Safe and Sick Leave or who are unsure of or wary of coming to a government agency. As the campaign tagline says—We fight for every worker in NYC.

In New York City, approximately 1 million adults have at least one student loan and collectively they owe $34.8 billion. This debt burden has a profound impact on the financial health of New Yorkers and disproportionately affects older borrowers, borrowers of color, and borrowers living in lower-income neighborhoods. The campaign informs New Yorkers about their rights and responsibilities when it comes to student loans, including payment options and resources to aid decision-making; warn about predatory practices by some schools and raise awareness about the NYC Financial Empowerment Centers where New Yorkers can get free financial counseling and referrals to legal services.

EmpoweredNYC counselors have more than 100 hours of specialized training to help people with disabilities to manage their budgets, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, tackle Social Security Administration (SSA) overpayments, and transition to work.

Our campaign aims to help shift the stigma associated with money and debt so people will take the steps necessary to improve their financial health just as they care for their physical health.
