The Bedford Health Center coordinates and hosts a variety of programs and activities focused on the health and wellness of Bedford-Stuyvesant residents. Our partners also offer both primary care and social services, such as assistance with insurance enrollment and SNAP.

The following services and activities are offered virtually, in-person, or both.

Most classes are in English, but if language services are needed, contact the center at least 72 hours before the class. Unless otherwise indicated, the location for all events and services is the Bedford Health Center.

The Bushwick Health Center coordinates and hosts a variety of programs and activities focused on the health and wellness of Bushwick residents. Our partners also offer both primary care and social services, such as assistance with WIC and SNAP.

Services and Activities

Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Class

We offer a free diabetes self-management education support program in collaboration with local partners. Classes are two hours long and are offered on a weekly basis. Classes run five or six weeks. People who complete five classes receive a free glucose monitor while supplies last.

Diabetes and Nutrition 101

Diabetes and Nutrition 101 workshops are one-hour in-person workshops that provides an understanding of diabetes, including managing blood sugar, understanding insulin and medication, and managing diabetes through lifestyle choices.

Hypertension 101

Hypertension 101 is a two-hour workshop that provides an overview of hypertension: How to prevent and control it, as well as how to accurately measure and self-monitor blood pressure.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program

Learn how to manage symptoms of hypertension and develop action plans to eat healthy, manage stress, use medications appropriately, and incorporate fitness in this six-week workshop.

People who complete five classes will receive a free blood pressure monitor with health coaching support.

Fresh Food Fridays Farmers Market

Our bi-weekly farmers market held in collaboration with the Campaign Against Hunger provides fresh, affordable produce to the community. Health Bucks vouchers, SNAP benefits, and cash accepted.

Hatha Yoga

Immerse yourself in hatha yoga, a class suitable for everyone. Dive into a medium-intensity session that focuses on the fundamentals of posture and precision, promoting ease of movement both in and outside of the class. All levels are welcome. Bring a yoga mat.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates is a beginner exercise class which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. The goals of this class are to improve posture, stabilize and elongate the spine and develop balance and overall strength. Mat Pilates is a great option for all fitness levels. Bring a mat.

  • Every Friday, 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Chair Yoga

Practice a gentle form of yoga, done while seated or using a chair for balance. Classes are scheduled in alignment with our Fresh Food Fridays Farmers Market.

Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Workshop

Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Workshop is an in-person, three-hour workshop for New Yorkers on community empowerment and individual and collective resilience. Workshop participants will be trained to identify mental health issues, develop support strategies, and identify mental health resources within their communities.

  • Second and last Friday of the month, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

GUIDE: Guiding Youth Through Intervention, Diversion, and Empowerment

This in-person, five-hour workshop provides participants with practical tools and strategies to manage crises, connect youth with essential support services, and strengthen mental health resilience. It also addresses the stigma surrounding mental health, offering guidance on creating supportive and inclusive environments for young people.

Naloxone Training

Naloxone trainings teach how to recognize and reverse an opioid overdose. Participants will become an opioid overdose responder and receive an overdose response kit with naloxone, a medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose and restores breathing.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Bedford

NYC Health + Hospitals provides high quality and affordable health care services to every member of your family. Primary care teams are specially trained to help you manage ongoing conditions, such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes, as well as access preventive care, such as annual check-ups and immunizations. They also provide confidential sexual and reproductive care for adolescents 13-21 years old.

Health Insurance Services

Health insurance counselors can explain your health insurance and care options regardless of your immigration status, help you and your family enroll in or renew health insurance, find out if you qualify for financial help to pay for a low-cost private health insurance plan, and assist with applying for SNAP benefits.

Nurse-Family Partnership

The Nurse-Family Partnership is an evidence-based nurse home visiting program for low-income first-time mothers. Nurses support mothers to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies, become knowledgeable and nurturing parents, achieve education and employment goals and provide their children with the best possible start in life.

COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment

The Bedford Health Center has personal protective equipment (PPE), including KN95 masks, surgical masks, sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes, for individuals and organizations. Submit a request form and we will fulfill it based on available inventory. A team member will reach out when your order is ready for pick-up.
