This section of our website provides safety resource materials for those working in the private carting industry. In 2014, Mayor de Blasio announced Vision Zero, an initiative to end traffic deaths and injuries in New York City. To further promote the goals laid out in the Vision Zero initiative, you will find information on this page regarding a variety of safety topics, including vehicle safety, driving safety, and workplace safety, among other helpful links.

Driving Safety

The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (USFMSCA) primary mission is to “prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.” Their website covers many helpful topics including: Advice on Driving, Hours of Service Regulations, and Traffic Enforcement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) mission is to “work daily to help prevent crashes and their attendant costs, both human and financial.” Their website offers many resources relating to driving safety.

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) provides truck-route maps, weight and size limits.

Vehicle Safety

NHTSA provides information on tire-safety, recalls, vehicle backover avoidance.

Workplace Issues

Workplace Safety

The United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for administering the OSHA Act, which ensures safe and healthy working conditions in all private industries in New York State. If you believe that a “violation of a safety or health standard exists,” you may file a complaint with OSHA to request an inspection. Visit the website to learn more about OSHA including how to obtain a complaint form, and when an employee is required to provide personal protective equipment at no cost to the employee.

Labor Laws

New York State Department of Labor’s Division of Labor Standards enforces the New York State Labor Laws by protecting the rights of private sector employees at their workplaces through outreach, training and enforcement. These laws cover issues such as minimum wage, hours of work, payment of wages and wage supplements.
