NYCHA Daycare Center Testing Initiative

In December 2025, NYCHA began an initiative to comprehensively test for lead-based paint using an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) device at 75 daycare centers at NYCHA developments that were built before 1978. This initiative was developed in coordination with HUD and the Federal Monitor and aligns with NYCHA’s obligations under the 2019 HUD Agreement, which requires NYCHA to identify and abate positive interior common areas.

All 75 centers were tested, yielding 69 positive centers and 6 negative centers. Of the 69 positive centers, 10 have already been abated. The remaining 59 positive centers will be scheduled for abatement this fall.
