What Makes City Street Smart – an explainer for how the TLC uses data for smart policymaking.
Beginning in March 2020, New York City faced an unprecedented public health crisis as most of the City's economy paused to slow the spread of COVID-19. This report summarizes the effects of the COVID-19 pause on TLC-regulated industries from March 15 – June 30, 2020, as most passengers stayed home. The report also describes the measures TLC took to help including utilizing drivers as part of the City food relief program and also connect drivers with other available government support.
Due to COVID-19 and its impact on the daily operations of small businesses, TLC granted smaller bases an extension on trip record submissions. This report only includes trip and trip-related data from Yellow Taxi, Street-Hail Livery and High Volume For-Hire Services.
From 2014 to 2020, TLC published a Factbook compiling the largest trends in the regulated for-hire industry segments and presenting them through maps, charts, and graphics. Rather than publish this data every other year, TLC has now created interactive data and mapping tools that are updated monthly, including the TLC Data Hub and the State of the Industry Dashboard Additional data continues to be available on TLC’s Data page and through other TLC reports.
