Breaking Bread, Building Bonds is a citywide initiative of the NYC Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes (OPHC) that brings New Yorkers together around a shared meal to foster dialogue, celebrate cultural traditions, and strengthen relationships across diverse communities. Rooted in the belief that there is more that unites us than divides us, the initiative creates welcoming spaces where participants can learn from one another, build trust, and cultivate a greater sense of belonging.

By creating opportunities for meaningful conversations among people of different backgrounds, Breaking Bread, Building Bonds seeks to reduce prejudice, strengthen social cohesion, and prevent bias, hate, and discrimination before they occur. The initiative recognizes that sharing a meal is one of the most powerful ways to build understanding, bridge differences, and create lasting community connections.

Program Goals

Breaking Bread, Building Bonds seeks to:

  • Build meaningful relationships across racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, and other diverse communities.

  • Foster dialogue that promotes understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.

  • Reduce isolation and strengthen trust among New Yorkers.

  • Increase awareness of bias, discrimination, and hate while promoting peaceful community engagement.

  • Support neighborhood-based efforts that create welcoming and inclusive communities.

  • Strengthen collaboration among community organizations, faith institutions, businesses, schools, and government agencies.

Activities & Engagement

Breaking Bread, Building Bonds supports a variety of community-centered gatherings, including:

  • Community meals and facilitated conversations

  • Interfaith and intercultural dinners

  • Cultural exchange programs

  • Storytelling and shared lived-experience discussions

  • Community celebrations that promote inclusion and belonging

  • Youth and intergenerational engagement activities
