By law, the Fire Department is required to maintain the privacy of health care information of individual patients. The Department is committed to preserving and respecting the privacy of all persons who are treated and transported as part of the emergency medical service system.

    Deficit Reduction Act (DRA)

    In accordance with the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) of 2005, the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is mandated, as a condition of its participation in the Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid), to establish written policies and procedures that inform its employees, contractors, agents, and other persons about the following: FDNY’s internal policies covering the prevention and detection of fraud, waste, and abuse in its health care operations, the federal False Claims Act and any similar law under the State of New York that governs false claims and statements and the whistleblower protections under federal and State laws.

Report Patient Privacy and Healthcare Compliance Concerns

Compliance counts, anonymously or confidentially report health care fraud or patient privacy (HIPAA) violations to the Fire Department.
