The Fairness in Apartment Rental Expenses (FARE) Act took effect on June 11, 2025. This law prohibits brokers who represent landlords from charging broker fees to tenants (renters). This includes brokers who publish listings with the landlord’s permission. Landlords or their agents must disclose all other fees that the renter must pay in their listings and rental agreements.
Renters: Know your rights and report complaints to DCWP.
Landlords/Brokers: Read FAQ to comply with the Law.
New Yorkers: Use our digital toolkit to help us remind renters about their rights and encourage people to report violations so that we can take enforcement action to ensure business compliance and protect our communities.
