James Satterwhite Academy

The James Satterwhite Academy (JSA) is the legacy of James Satterwhite, a visionary social worker and educator who founded the ACS Training Academy, the organization that now proudly bears his name. Mr. Satterwhite was dedicated to growing the skills of staff who serve children, youth, and families. Prior to that role, he directed training programs for the City’s Department of Welfare, led the Mayor’s Committee on Foster Care, and taught social work at his alma mater, Columbia University, as well as at Hunter College.

Today, JSA honors Mr. Satterwhite’s vision by inspiring child welfare and juvenile justice staff to provide the highest level of services. JSA’s innovative trainings make sure to include the voices of children and families to ensure cultural sensitivity and respect.

JSA emphasizes the onboarding and ongoing in-service training of Child Protective Specialists (CPS) and Youth Development Specialists (YDS) who work directly with families and youth. During their first weeks in these roles, they take intensive training that blends classroom instruction with on-the-job learning. In this way, new specialists gain the knowledge and skills needed to conduct child protective investigations and support youth involved with the juvenile justice system.
