HHC Expands Mental Health Services

Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz, NCBH Chief Operating Officer Sheldon P. McLeod and Congressman Charles Rangel at the opening of the new psychiatric emergency room at North Central Bronx Hospital.

HHC this month expanded emergency, inpatient and outpatient mental health services for children, adolescents and adults with the opening and expansion of new psychiatric care units at Bellevue Hospital, North Central Bronx and Lincoln Medical Center.

At Bellevue, the opening of a new, 15-bed inpatient psychiatric unit for adolescents marked the hospital's 90-year history as a leader in child psychiatry. The new unit expands the inpatient capacity to 45 beds that will serve more than 400 young people annually. The secure unit has been designed to provide an optimal environment for the treatment of psychiatric crises, including depression, suicidal or aggressive behavior, psychosis and serious family conflicts. At North Central Bronx Hospital, healthcare professionals, elected officials and community leaders celebrated the opening of the hospital’s renovated and greatly expanded Psychiatric Emergency Room that will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing treatment to all those in need of emergency mental health services. Last year alone, NCBH Psych ER evaluated nearly 3,400 patients. The new ED nearly triples the clinical space and will be able to accommodate more patient volume. Learn more.

At Lincoln Medical Center, hospital officials marked the opening of the new Integrated Wellness Center to improve the health of patients with serious mental illness. The center provides “one-stop-shop” for coordinated primary care and behavioral health services for adult patients with serious mental illness and other chronic health conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. This center is another example of HHC’s efforts to adopt best practices that combine the treatment of physical and mental health as a holistic approach to patient care. Learn more.
