Keeping mothers and their babies healthy is the goal of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. WIC is a federally-funded, state-run program that focuses on the nutritional well-being of pregnant women and mothers of children up to age 5.

There is no better place to experience the caring, supportive healthcare that characterizes Gouverneur than in its WIC program.

Pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women as well as mothers with babies and children up to 5 years old are eligible. Our friendly, dedicated support staff will help determine whether or not you qualify for WIC and help you through the application process. You must be a resident of New York (although you don't have to be a U.S. citizen) and be shown to have a health risk such as:

• Low iron
• Underweight or overweight
• Certain medical problems

Once you are enrolled in our WIC program you will meet with one of Gouverneur's five WIC nutritionists who will counsel you on how to stay healthier before and after you give birth as well as what foods to feed your family. WIC nutritionists understand that food choices, lifestyle, overall health and behavior affect pregnancy and child development. Our nutritionists will also advise you on ways to get your children to eat more fruits and vegetables.

WIC helps you save money on food. You will receive monthly WIC checks that you can use at several stores to purchase food for your family. Our staff will discuss the food package that you qualify for, which foods WIC checks can be applied to and how to get the most out of your monthly allowance.

Gouverneur's WIC program offers a number of free group discussions on shopping, feeding children, physical activity, breastfeeding and other subjects that you are welcome to attend for free. Our staff will sign you up for those that are appropriate for you.

When you or members of your family need medical care, WIC staff members will provide referrals to other services offered at Gouverneur and will advise you on other available community based services.
