Support for Gouverneur and its major modernization was apparent at 11th Annual Gala event on September 15th. The event attracted a crowd of almost 1,000 people that included elected officials, community leaders, business leaders and Gouverneur/HHC staff.

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, New York City Council Member Margaret Chin, The Fukien Benevolent Association of American and Businessman Shou Jun Li were recognized at the event for their distinguished careers and support for Gouverneur. The New York City and Health and Hospitals Corporation administrations were also thanked for their support for Gouverneur, which has enabled it to enhance and expand services during the current economic downturn.

This is a special year for Gouverneur as it marks our 125th year of serving the healthcare needs of New Yorkers. Executive Director Mendel Hagler noted that although we're proud of our accomplishments to date, we're even more excited by our future. The new Residence at Gouverneur Court and The Center for Community Health and Wellness are quickly taking shape. During the next few months our first new nursing unit will be operational and the new ambulatory care building will be completed shortly thereafter.

The community support that Gouverneur has received has enabled it to reach this exciting moment in its history. Two years ago, ground was broken on a $180 million modernization project to rebuild Gouverneur into the healthcare destination of choice for Lower Manhattan and beyond. The money raised at Galas events helps to execute the planned finishes for our Modernization project that will enhance the overall patient experience and will also enable us to expand and improve upon our existing preventive care and wellness programs.

The Gala event was a notable highlight in an important and significant year for Gouverneur and the Lower East Side Community.
