What will my license look like when I renew?

TLC will now use a unified look for all TLC drivers’ licenses (see example above). Licensees will receive their new license via mail.

My license was recently renewed/approved. Can I see status updates for when the license was printed/mailed/etc.?

Log onto TLC UP Portal for status updates on the printing and mailing of your license

I want the new license design now. Can I replace my current TLC license?

If you currently hold a valid TLC Driver’s License, you can keep using your current TLC license. You will receive the new license design at your next renewal. Replacements are only available for a driver whose license is lost or stolen. TLC charges $25.00 (twenty-five dollars) to replace a license.

What will the process be for TLC drivers with out-of-state licenses?

For Licensees with a DMV license from a state other than NYS, you must follow the below process:

  1. Print the ID-5 form to take to any NYS DMV office.
  2. The NYS DMV office will take your picture & issue a Client ID.  DMV staff will give you a receipt upon completing this step.
  3. Upload the receipt in TLCUP. (Note: TLCUP will only allow uploads during your renewal period.)

My TLC Driver’s License was lost or stolen. What do I need to do?

Make an appointment here at TLC online appointment system to visit the TLC Licensing facility in Long Island City. Be sure to review the TLC credential replacement instruction sheet carefully, to confirm which pieces of identification you need to bring to the appointment.

New York State DMV license holders: during your visit to the Long Island City office, you will receive a temporary paper license that will be valid for ten (10) days. TLC will order your permanent replacement license, and it will be mailed to your address on file. Update your mailing address online now if you’ve recently moved.

DMV license holders from other states: When you schedule an appointment to replace your license, you will be required to complete the required steps (ID-5 form and NYS DMV visit) prior to your appointment. You must bring the DMV receipt with you to the TLC office. Upon completing these steps, you will receive your TLC License.

I have a New Jersey/Connecticut/Pennsylvania/other state DMV driver’s license. Do I need to do anything now?

If you are in your renewal period, follow the steps as listed above (ID-5 form completion, NYS DMV visit, and receipt upload) or click here. You must also complete any other missing requirements.

If you are not in your renewal period, you do not need to take any further steps. However, you will need to visit a New York State DMV office when your license is due for renewal.  Upon renewal, you must follow the steps listed above to receive your new TLC license via mail.

What if I change the state of my DMV Driver's License?

Anyone moving from one state to another must complete an affirmation form called "TLC Affirmation for DMV State Change". Licensees must complete this form each time they change their DMV license . Please follow the instructions on the form.

I prefer the photo on my TLC Driver’s License rather than the photo on my NYS DMV driver’s license. Can I keep the old photo when I receive my next license?

No. TLC will only use New York State DMV photos. If you want the photo on your NYS DMV license updated, visit a NYS DMV office.

I received a Directive to update the photo on my TLC Driver’s License because it no longer looks like me. What do I need to do?

New York State DMV license holders: check the photo on your DMV license first. If the photo is up-to-date, make an appointment at TLC’s Licensing facility to have a new license ordered for you. If your DMV photo is not up-to-date, visit a NYS DMV office to retake your photograph first. If you hold a DMV driver’s license from another state, make an appointment at TLC’s Licensing facility to have a new photograph taken for your TLC license.

Current TLC Drivers with a license from state other than New York: you must follow steps here then make an appointment at the LIC office.  For New York State DMV license holders: check the photo on your DMV license first. If the photo is up to date, make an appointment at TLC’s Licensing facility to have a new license ordered for you. If your DMV photo is not up to date, visit a NYS DMV office to retake your photograph first. If you hold a DMV driver’s license from another state, make an appointment at TLC’s Licensing facility to have a new photograph taken for your TLC license.

New applicants who hold an out-of-state DMV license: you must complete the ID-5 and DMV receipt requirement before your license is issued.
