This session is conducted by Ariva, a non-profit organization that provides free tax preparation and financial counseling services for New Yorkers. Topics covered in this session include savings, credit, debt management, and budget action plans that can help you prepare for and reach your housing goals.

Navigating Housing Court and Understanding Rental Housing Regulations

New York’s Rent Laws provide protections for tenants of rent-stabilized and rent controlled apartments, including the right to lease renewals and limitations on rent increases. This session will provide an overview of the rights of tenants and the responsibilities of property owners, as well tips on how to mediate tenant-landlord disputes and when you should go to Housing Court.

How to Eliminate Rodents, Bedbugs, Roaches, and Other Pests

Residential building owners in New York City are required to take steps to identify and keep their buildings free of mice, rats, roaches, and bedbugs. In this session, we will discuss the owner’s responsibilities to identify and eliminate pests, review the annual inspection requirements, and when to use a licensed contractor.

This session provides information about protected classes under the New York City Human Rights Law, emphasizing protections against discrimination based on lawful source of income and disabilities. It also covers unlawful, discriminatory lending practices and how the human rights law can protect against tenant harassment. The NYC Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is here to help!

Lead-Based Paint Basics: An Overview of New York City’s Requirements for Building Owners

The City's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act (Local Law 1 of 2004) requires property owners to identify and remediate lead-based paint hazards in apartments where young children reside, using safe work practices and certified contractors. This session will provide information about how to identify, remediate, and notify tenants about lead paint-based hazards; it will also describe how to remove violations and what resources are available to help.

Navigating DOB Rules: How to Get Permits, Resolve OATH Summons, and More

Come learn how to navigate the Department of Buildings’ online resources including DOB NOW, Building Permits, Certificate of Occupancy (COB) and the Building Information System (BIS). This session will be also geared towards property owners who have existing “open” OATH summonses issued by a DOB Inspector. Guidance will be provided on how to resolve these and submitting an acceptable Certificate of Correction to the Department of Buildings Administrative Enforcement Unit.
