MTA Bridges and Tunnels work zone camera violations

Under the MTA’s Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program, speed cameras are placed in active work zones, including construction and maintenance zones, on certain highways, parkways, bridges, and tunnels that are under the jurisdiction of the state of New York.

On June 30, 2026, the MTA activated speed cameras at active work zones on MTA bridges and tunnels. Drivers who are recorded driving more than 10 miles per hour above the posted speed limit will receive a warning notice. Signs alerting drivers to the presence of speed enforcement cameras will be posted.

The affected MTA Bridge and Tunnel areas include:

  • Bronx-Whitestone Bridge
  • Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge
  • Henry Hudson Bridge
  • Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge
  • Robert F. Kennedy Bridge
  • Throgs Neck Bridge
  • Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
  • Hugh L. Carey Tunnel
  • Queens-Midtown Tunnel

Possible defenses

You can dispute a work zone camera violation if:

  • You have evidence showing that the violation was issued outside of the enforceable days or hours.
  • You have evidence showing that your vehicle was not the vehicle in violation. (For example, there were other vehicles near yours at the time of occurrence, and the camera captured the wrong vehicle.)
  • You have evidence showing that the camera malfunctioned on the date of the occurrence.
  • You have evidence to show that your vehicle was reported stolen, and not recovered, before the occurrence.

Other information

  • Radar, camera, and computer equipment are mounted on an unmarked vehicle stationed in a work zone. This equipment will identify vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit and trigger the cameras to take photos of the vehicles, including their license plate numbers.
  • Data collected includes the date and time that the images are recorded, the posted speed limit, the vehicle’s actual speed, and the license plate information used to identify the registered vehicle owner.
  • A certified MTA Bridges and Tunnels technician will verify that the data is correct. If the technician confirms that a violation occurred, a Notice of Liability will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner.
