Street Cleaning

DSNY uses mechanical brooms (also known as street sweepers) to clean NYC streets. They sweep up litter from along the curb on thousands of miles of New York City streets, including narrow protected bike lanes. Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations allow this street cleaning to take place.

Alternate Side Parking (ASP)

ASP signs indicate days and times when parking is not allowed. You cannot park on the side of the street that is being cleaned when ASP rules are in effect. The rules apply for the length of the entire block, and for the entire time posted on the sign, even if the street sweeper has already passed.

ASP rules are suspended on certain legal and religious holidays each year, during severe weather, and for emergencies. On Sundays, ASP is not in effect, and you do not have to pay parking meters.

If you do not move your vehicle while ASP is in effect, you may get a ticket.

NOTE: It is NEVER legal to double-park a passenger vehicle, regardless of location, purpose, or duration.
