The NYC Bin is the official trash bin for properties with 1-9 residential units and some larger buildings. Separate NYC Bins are also available for recycling and composting, but are not required.
Official NYC Bins are available for pick-up at NYC Home Depot stores. Bins can also be ordered online for delivery using one of Home Depot's on-demand delivery partners.

If you ordered an NYC Bin in fall 2025 and have not yet received it, deliveries have resumed and are on target to be completed by March 31.

Owners of one- and two-family homes who receive the STAR property tax benefit are eligible for an NYC Trash Bin reimbursement from the NYC Department of Finance.
If you purchase a bin from Home Depot or a delivery partner (DoorDash, Instacart, Uber Eats), you will need to apply for the reimbursement.
If you are eligible and have already purchased a bin online through the manufacturer (Otto), the NYC Department of Finance will automatically send you a check.

Unveiled on July 8, 2024, the NYC Bin is the next step in New York City's plan to get the black trash bags off the streets and make our city cleaner and safer for all New Yorkers.
The NYC Bin was selected following the City's release of an RFP in October 2023 to contract a vendor to produce official NYC Bins. In the RFP, DSNY mandated that the vendor produce bins according to specifications including, but not limited to:
DSNY collection trucks will include mechanical tippers compatible with the new bins. Two sanitation workers will be needed to operate the mechanism, and this change will not affect DSNY workforce numbers.
