DURING NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES MONTH, NEW YORK CITY ARTIST CORPS MEMBERS OFFER 250+ EVENTS, PERFORMANCES, AND PROGRAMS THROUGH OCTOBER 24
New York, NY - With the culmination of the historic New York City Artist Corps program this month - National Arts and Humanities Month - local artists will offer over 250 public workshops, exhibitions, performances, murals, and other free cultural engagements across the boroughs in the weeks ahead.
City Artist Corps was announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Gonzalo Casals in May 2021 as a way to support artists who live and work in NYC. Since then, the $25 million program has provided funding to thousands of artists through City Artist Corps Grants, administered in collaboration with New York Foundation for the Arts and other local partners; hundreds of City Artist Corps members have also worked with students in more than 200 NYC Department of Education schools; created murals in collaboration with ArtBridge and NYCHA residents; and engaged audiences across the city at The People’s Festival.
In addition, City Artist Corps members have participated in BeautifyNYC, which is supporting 21 projects in neighborhoods in every borough with youth participants, artists, and local arts centers. This month, the following culminating events will take place:
- At Universe City, participants assisted farmers and learned about sustenance farming techniques and goals. A final celebratory event will be held on October 16 at 495 Osborn Street in Brooklyn from 11 am to 3 pm.
- MakerSpace NYC participants learned about Computer Numerical Control training to create and design tree guards, and will unveil them on Sunday, October 17 at 423 Targee Avenue, Staten Island, from 2 to 4 pm.
- Art for Self Esteem participants interviewed and created portraits of Brownsville community members. Their work will be on display on October 22 at Collective Fare, 69 Belmont Avenue, Brooklyn from 5 to 7 pm.
- At Starseed, students learned about and used VR technology in projects expressing their ideas, which will be presented in an outdoor experiential final event where the public can engage in new worlds created by participants. Event will be held at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem.

10/13: Tom Block (Manhattan) will present “Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander,” a new full-length play, at The Tank, 312 W 36th St, through October 16, daily at 7 pm.
10/13: Cherry Brice Jr. (Manhattan) will host a salon series focusing on the theme “The Civic Cinema”, offering a space for discussion and debate about cinema, at Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd Ave.
10/13: Jonny Goldstein and Adam Nadel (Queens) will show slides of their in-progress works - the graphic memoir, “American Colon,” and photography projects, respectively - followed by an audience discussion at Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights from 8 to 9 pm.
10/13: Valeria Olaya-Florez (Queens) will hold an open rehearsal of Rueda de Cumbia—a traditional music and dance form blended from European, African, and indigenous cultures—with opportunities for audience participation and learning at Juniper Valley Park, Juniper Blvd. and Lutheran Ave., at 5 pm.
10/13: Michael Raver (Manhattan) will hold a public reading of the original work “Control” at TheatreLab NYC, 357 W 36th St 3rd Floor, at 7 pm.
10/13: Zachary Laks (Manhattan) and partners will host a public reading of the new musical “Liner Notes on Love and Music” at Green Room 42, 570 10th Ave, at 7 pm.
10/13: Ani Taj, Stivo Arnoczy (Manhattan) and Sunny Hitt will present a dance performance in a gallery to explore the economics of dance at SOMMWHERE, 48 Ludlow St, at 7 pm.
10/13: Agustín Grasso (Brooklyn), Eric Zolan, and Kyle Koehler will perform guitar and organ music at Bodeguita BK, 6 Suydam St, from 8 to 11 pm.
10/14: Arantxa Rodriguez (Bronx) will host a mandala coloring activity as part of Hispanic Heritage Month and to celebrate an on-site mural at Lincoln Medical Center from 3 to 7 pm.
10/14: Nancy Siesel (Brooklyn) will present portraits from “"Survivor Portraits and the Echoes of History,” comprised of environmental photographs from Holocaust survivors paired with oral recordings and family documents, at Borough Park Library, 1265 43rd St. at 13th Ave.
10/14: Malcolm Hansen (Manhattan) and guests will host “Pandemic Drafts,” a reading of excerpts from their in-progress and published works, at KGB Bar, 85 E 4th St.
10/14: Emily Johnson (Manhattan) will host an outdoor event with musical guests at Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand Street, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
10/14: Ben Tripp (Brooklyn) and guests will perform original and improvised music and spoken-word poetry at Evergreen Park in Ridgewood from 5 to 8 pm.
10/14: Camila Celin (Brooklyn) and guests will perform at and curate a fusion of Indian and Latin music at Rosa NY, 386 Metropolitan Ave.
10/14: Kaiho Wong (Queens) will host a comedy show featuring diverse New York-based comedians at Grove 34, 3183 34th St, at 8 pm.
10/14: Zeeshan Kamran (Manhattan) will host "Your Friendly Neighborhood Alien Reception," an immersive virtual reality art gallery with pop-up shops, live musical performances, and more. All day, October 14-15.
10/14: Magaly Colimon-Christopher (Queens) will premiere “Aftershocks: A Tetralogy of Our Times,” an animation, montage, and theatre mixed-media production that explores love and life in Caribbean-American communities in NYC during the coronavirus pandemic. 10/14: Amanda Miller (Manhattan) and guests will host an evening of poetry, crime fiction, live music, comedy, and trivia at Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond St, at 7 pm.
10/14: Luke Cissell (Manhattan) will host a listening party for their new recorded work, “Emerald Cities,” at Chinatown Soup, 16B Orchard Street, from 7 to 9 pm.
10/14: Suejin Jung (Manhattan) will perform a live, family-friendly piano concert featuring children’s stories and an animation film at Jackie Robinson Park from 6 to 7 pm.
10/14: Todd Burbank Grennan (Brooklyn) will hold a fall literary event where queer writers writing in different styles and genres will present their work inspired by Brooklyn’s past, present, and future queer communities at Irish Haven, 5721 4th Ave, from 8 to 10 pm.
10/14: Blaze Ferrer (Brooklyn) will choreograph a live dance performance, “Gusher,” in Brooklyn. Additional performances will be held on October 15 and 16.
10/14: Krisanne Johnson (Brooklyn) will host a pop-exhibit featuring their photography of black-and-white images documenting NYC youth culture over the past ten years at their studio in Bushwick at 4 pm.
10/14: Arantxa Rodriguez (Bronx) will create a mural celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with community and staff at Lincoln Medical Center, 234 E 149th St, from 1 to 7 pm.
10/15: Eric Emma (Manhattan) will screen “The Muck,” followed by an audience talk back focusing on the effects of migration and poverty in America, at a venue in Harlem.
10/15: Guillermo Laporta (Queens) will present a music and video composition, “Prelude to Queens,” featuring Queens residents and exploring diversity, social justice, and connections. Screening will be held at Culture Lab in Long Island City, 5-25 46th Ave.
10/15: Tessa Hughes-Freeland (Manhattan) will host “Body as Playground, Body as Battleground; Sexuality and the Female Gaze,” a screening of experimental films by 8-10 women filmmakers and panel discussion.
10/15: Jordan Dykstra (Brooklyn) will perform his new composition "GG" with 21 local musicians on each of the G train's 21 platforms, promoting playful curiosity for the train’s riders, 6 to 6:45pm and then again from 7 to 7:45pm.
10/15: Maria Liebsekind (Brooklyn) will showcase songs from her upcoming album at Bacque Recording Studios.
10/15: Felix Reyes (Brooklyn), Mark Dylan, and Carlo de Biaggio will perform original songs and covers of artists including One Republic, Queen, and Bill Withers at Roots Cafe, 639 5th Ave.
10/15: David Scott (Manhattan) will perform original songs alongside the The Dave Scott Quintet and The Dave Scott Violin Band, featuring various music instruments, at Greenwich House Music School, 46 Barrow St, from 7 to 10 pm.
10/15: Kay Wasil (Brooklyn) will host “Through the Looking Glass,” a drag tribute to Alice in Wonderland featuring interpretations of the story by eight drag artists, at The Brick, 579 Metropolitan Avenue, at 8 pm. Additional performance will be held on October 16 at 8 pm.
10/15: Stephanie Lee (Queens) will host and curate “Communicating Beyond Words,” a group exhibition of twelve artists who use letterforms as visual elements in native languages, illustration, street art, tattoo art, and more. Exhibit will be held at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd, from 6 to 8 pm, with additional dates through October 31.
10/15: Harley Ngai Grieco (Brooklynn) will produce a group visual arts exhibition, “On Terrain and Emblem,” at J&M Studios, 201 46th Street Studio #204, from 6 to 9 pm. Additional dates through October 30.
10/15: Marielis Garcia (Manhattan) will perform “Entre Worlds,” a live and virtual exploration of layers of Latinx identities and influenced by philosopher Mariana Ortega’s research, at Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street, at 8 pm.
10/15: Fabio Rojas (Brooklyn) and his quintet will perform original compositions blending different musical traditions, including modern jazz, at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music at 8 pm.
10/15: Josefina Urraca (Queens) will perform classical piano music by Mozart, Rachmaninoff and American composers, Clement, Karnilaw and Moon, and accompanied by visual art, at Culture Lab LIC at The Plaxall Gallery, 5-25 46th Ave, at 6 pm.
10/15: Tebogo Malebogo, Jermaine Manigault (Manhattan) and partners will screen short films, including Jermaine Manigault's “Not Black Enough” and Tebogo Malebogo's “Heaven Reaches Down to Earth,” at Museum of Modern Art, 11 W 53rd St, from 6 to 10 pm.
10/15: Weihui Lu (Queens) will create a site-specific installation, “The End of the World is Forever,” a 42 feet scroll inspired by Chinese landscape painting to address climate change and mental health at 1639 Centre St. Rm 122 in Ridgewood from 6 to 9 pm. Exhibition will run through November 7, with gallery hours Fri-Sun, 1-6pm.
10/15: Jenny Pisani (Staten Island) will host “The Garbage We Inherit, The Garbage We Create,” a poetry event guiding writers through a transformative process reflecting on the landscape at Freshkills Park Studio + Gallery, 2240 Richmond Ave, from 7 to 8:30 pm.
10/16: Nicholas Satchell (Queens) will perform songs from the musical “Sequel to Nothing” and other songs at Queens Theatre.
10/16: Tea’a Taylor (Queens) will showcase a short documentary film and photo exhibit at Queens Theatre.

10/16: Azita Moradkhani (Manhattan) will exhibit “The Real Beneath,” fashion works inspired by their drawings of the female body, lingerie, and vulnerability, at LMCC’s Arts Center Residency in Governor’s Island, Building 110.
10/16: Koeraus (Brooklyn) will perform with the groups Sound Bridges & Percussive Dance and Flamenco y Sol, alongside a community dance and drum class, at New Lots Plaza.

10/16: Victoria Bellinger (Staten Island) will host “Fragile Vessels,” an exhibition featuring their ceramic sculptures and the sculptures created with their late husband. The exhibit will reflect the couple’s artistic life and collaboration, and will be held at Art on the Terrace Gallery, 776 Richmond Terrace.
10/16: Miriam Aristy-Farer (Manhattan) and partners will host a plant-based art party sharing medicinal benefits, journaling, and more at the 148th Street Health Fair, 148th Street between Amsterdam and Broadway Avenues, from 10 am to 5 pm.
10/16: Emily Harrold (Manhattan) will screen two of their original documentaries, “Reporting On The Times” and “While I Breathe, I Hope,” followed by an audience Q&A, at Manhattan Neighborhood Network El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center, 175 E 104th St, from 3 to 5 pm.

10/16: Barbara Westermann (Queens) will host an event as part of their Regional Planning Lab exhibition and public workshop focusing on dream maps, biological and ecological systems, architecture in NYC, and more to investigate the metropolis through real and imagined settings. 10/16: Migiwa Miyajima (Manhattan) will coordinate the performance of the Samurai Jazz Project, a collaboration between Japanese Tate-dance master Kyo Kasumi and original jazz music composed by the artist. Performance will be held at the Church of the Holy Apostles, 296 9th Ave.
10/16: Michael Cavadias (Manhattan) will perform in costume as Claywoman, a 500 million year old alien, and will speak about the character’s life and history at Dixon Place, 161 Christie Street, at 4 pm.

10/16: D.Cross (Brooklyn) will host “Word Art Sound,” a visual art exhibition using upcycled cassettes, vinyl, and discarded lottery cards and impromptu pop-up performance of beatbox and poetry at African Voices Pop-Up Galley, 325 Lafayette Avenue, from 2 to 4 pm.

10/16: Ibrahim Siddiq (Bronx) will host a town hall and open mic to encourage community dialogue focusing on three facets necessary for community prosperity: social, economic and environmental. 10/16: Ben Rosenfeld (Manhattan) will host “Truth or Laughs?”, an interactive comedy show that takes the audience behind-the-scenes of funny stories with hilarious reveals with opening act Youjean Chang. The Pit Loft, 154 W 29th St, 7 pm. RSVP here.
10/16: Stella Fiore (Staten Island) will host “An Artist Residency in Motherhood: Work Made at Home,” a reading of work made by mothers at home during the pandemic. Guest performance by local singer-songwriter Jennie Young. Rutan-Becket House at Conference House Park, 6 Shore Road, 2 pm. Rain location is at the Pavilion at Conference House Park.
10/16: Rick Diaz (Manhattan) partnered with P.S. 154 in Mott Haven and worked with 4th grade students to design a painting called “Hope for a Better Future.” Once the painting is completed, Diaz will photograph it, have it printed on a banner and hang it at the entrance of the school's exterior. 401 W 164th St, 1 pm - 3pm.
10/16: Nicholas Rivera (Queens) will host a cultural and artistic exchange film festival presenting short films and new media from artists that are in marginalized, underrepresented and underserved communities. Hosted by Award Winner Advocate of Wordz and Featuring DJ Spazz. The Queens Social, 32-86 Steinway Street, 8pm.
10/16: Kemar Jewel (Brooklyn), to celebrate LGBTQ history month, is throwing a ball. The event will serve as a creative and safe space for queer and trans youth of color to vogue, get in drag, walk runway and much more. Wu Lounge, 1073 Atlantic Avenue, 6pm - 10pm.
10/16: Erica Bowen (Brooklyn), is hosting Day of the Diaspora to celebrate the arts, history, and contributions and connections of the African and Latino diaspora. The day features a variety of family friendly workshops, panel discussion, dance performance, and live Salsa music. World Arts East Red Hook, 127 King Street, 2nd Floor, 10am - 5pm.
10/16: Andrea Abi-Karam (Brooklyn): //CLUB LIT// ft. Hazem Fahmy, Zaina Arafat, Sahar Khraibani, Kamelya Omayma Youssef, & Andrea Abi-Karam. As a creative response to ongoing political turmoil, this assemblage of NYC based SWANA writers will present work dealing with various themes across poetry and prose. 10/16: Bruce Zeines (Bronx) presents “Come Paint with Me,” inviting people to engage with the garden and art making by helping to create a large floral. 10/16: Richard Ilfraim (Queens) presents “Women in Color,” a digital art collection in different libraries to embrace the greatness of women from different countries. Queens Library, various locations.
10/17: Cody Herrmann and sTo Len (Queens) will host FREAK THE CREEK, including performances by Sugarlife, Sunk Shore, sTo Len, Anaïs Maviel + Rashaan Carter, Cody Herrmann, Smhoak, Erica Dawn Lyle, and the Canal Street Research Association. Participants have the option to meet on the sidewalk under the Mets - Willets Point subway station for a guided tour starting at 2PM, or arrive on their own. Performances begin on the beach at 3PM. 10/16: Elizabeth Mislan (Brooklyn): “Lost & Found” is a literary and visual community arts project with two ways to participate: through attending a movement and creative writing workshop in the park on October 16, or by drop in engagement on October 17. 10/17: Nicole Betancourt (Manhattan) will host THE UNFIXING, a video and Sound Art Installation by Nicole Betancourt and Bray Poor. Join them to walk through the garden, listen to a soundscape, see a video installation of a transformative experience with chronic illness, or sit in meditation at a memorial honoring the natural world during this epoch of climate breakdown. 10/17: Amanda Enzo (Brooklyn) will be working with the organization Bridge-4-Life to create audio and visual installations.

10/17: Lori Kent (Manhattan) will exhibit "3358: A Sheep Show," a mixed-media exploration of work, folklore, and the many creatures on an Icelandic sheep farm at the Thomas Hunter Gallery at Hunter College. 10/17: The Creative Sanctum (Manhattan), in conjunction with Chinatown Yarn Circle, Naomi Lawrence, and Think!Chinatown, will unveil a community-created fiber arts mural featuring the words "Stand, Speak, Shape" in English and Chinese created by volunteers from Chinatown residents and Chinatown allies. 10/23: Judith Sloan (Queens) and guest musicians will perform songs from her play-in-progress "It Can Happen Here", which follows the lives of five women in Queens who are bonded together through their neighborhood hair salon. 10/23: Fred Kuwornu (Queens) will screen their short documentary “Blaq•It – The stories of Black Italians in New York City,” which explores the lives of three Black Italian artists who have emigrated from Italy to NYC. A talk with Kuwomu and Italian-Nigerian music artist Wado will follow the showing. The event will take place at 29-22 Northern Boulevard, at 3 pm.
10/23: Leonardo Sardella (Manhattan) of the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center will host New York Queer Tango Weekend (NYQTW), a series of days celebrating Tango with programming including special tango social parties, performances by featured teachers, musicians, singers, and DJs. The event will conclude at the studio for refreshments, a show and tell and a preview of the forthcoming publication at 5 pm.
10/23: Karen Light (Manhattan) will perform “Prowling the Abyss,” a solo play in which a devastated Medusa hosts an evening of comedy, but each act derails the show
into a mythic confrontation with misogyny and an initiation into Queer Femme. The play will be performed at Theaterlab, 357 W 36th St at 5 pm. Additional performance will be held on October 24 at 5 pm.
