New clients will need to create a Financial Empowerment Portal account and complete the Client Services Agreement before a remote financial counseling appointment.

What is financial counseling and coaching?

NYC Financial Empowerment Centers provide FREE one-on-one professional, financial counseling and coaching to support you in reaching your financial goals. Learn more at nyc.gov/talkmoney.

What happens during my first session with an NYC Financial Empowerment Center counselor?

Your counselor will call you at the phone number you provided and ask you to confirm your date of birth and street address; this is similar to how you would confirm your identity at a doctor’s office. Your counselor may ask for your Social Security Number for the purpose of pulling your credit report, but you have the option not to share it. Your counselor will ask you information about your current financial situation and help identify your financial goals.

Note: Counselors will NEVER ask you to provide payment.

What are some of the questions an NYC Financial Empowerment Center counselor would ask?

Questions may include:

  • What is your monthly income and expenses?
  • How much do you have in savings, assets, and investments?
  • How much you owe in debt, what kind of debt are you holding, and their statuses (e.g. paid on time, in default, etc.)?
  • Do you know your credit score? Would you like to improve your credit score? If you have a copy of your credit report, upload it on the My Documents tab on the Portal to share with your financial counselor along with any relevant letters, statements, or notices from creditors. If you don’t have a recent copy of your credit report, you can obtain one at www.annualcreditreport.com.

What happens after my first financial counseling appointment?

At the end of your first financial counseling session, you and your financial counselor will have developed an Action Plan with a list of specific Action Steps to help you reach your financial goals. Your financial counselor will end your appointment by offering a follow-up appointment and recommend a good timeframe for your next session.

We recommend you log back into your Portal account regularly to update your Action Plan, securely share additional documents with your financial counselor, manage follow-up sessions with your counselor, and see your financial progress.

How do I reschedule or cancel my appointment?

Go to your confirmation email or text message and follow directions to reschedule or cancel your appointment.

Note: If you have a Financial Empowerment Portal account, click on log in button at the top of the page to view and manage your appointments.

Do I need to be a NYC resident to book a financial counseling appointment?
