Locksmith Apprentice License Application Checklist

Who Must Have a Locksmith Apprentice License?

You must have a Locksmith Apprentice license if you are employed by and learning the trade of locksmithing under the supervision of a licensed locksmith.

The apprentice training period cannot exceed 36 months. After 36 months of being a Locksmith Apprentice, you must apply for a Locksmith license if you decide to continue with locksmith activities. If you satisfy the requirements for a Locksmith license before the end of the 36-month period, you may submit an application for a Locksmith license.

This description is only a general explanation of who must have a Locksmith Apprentice license.

License Requirements

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) will deny your application if you fail to provide the required documents and information:

Photo Identification (ID) of License Applicant

Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Driver’s license or a non-driver’s license identification issued by a State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • License or permit issued by a government agency
  • Passport
  • Alien card/green card
  • City, State, or Federal employee ID card
  • Municipal ID card

One Current Color Passport-size Photograph of License Applicant

Online: Applicants can upload an image file of digital passport photo quality.
A digital camera with a resolution of 1 mega-pixel is adequate.

Mail: Applicants can submit a current color passport-size photograph.

In Person By Appointment Only: See Questions section to contact DCWP.
DCWP will photograph license applicants at no cost.

Proof of Employment by Licensed Locksmith

You must be employed by a Locksmith licensed by DCWP. As proof, you must submit a letter from your employer confirming your employment and the employer’s DCWP Locksmith license number.

Fingerprints and Processing Fee

You must schedule an appointment with IdentoGO to be fingerprinted:

  • Visit https://uenroll.identogo.com
  • Enter:
    • Service Code. Enter 1585FZ
    • Agency ID. Enter numbers only from Application Number. Application Number is on your receipt or confirmation letter when you apply online. Example: For Application Number 1234567-2023-AHIC, enter only 12345672023 as Agency ID.
  • Follow the instructions and pay the required fee(s).

IMPORTANT:

  • Anyone required to be fingerprinted should schedule an appointment as soon as possible to complete this requirement.

Granting Authority to Act Affirmation

Required if someone other than the license applicant will prepare and submit this application. The applicant must sign the license application and all related forms. Download Granting Authority to Act Affirmation.

License Fee

License Period: 2 years

Expiration Date: May 31 in Odd Years

If You File Your Application Between These Dates:

  • From June 1 in an odd year to November 30 in an odd year:
    • Pay $20 for a license expiring May 31 of the next odd year. (Valid for at most 24 months.)
  • From December 1 in an odd year to May 31 in an even year:
    • Pay $15 for a license expiring May 31 of the soonest odd year. (Valid for at most 18 months.)
  • From June 1 in an even year to November 30 in an even year:
    • Pay $10 for a license expiring May 31 of the soonest odd year. (Valid for at most 12 months.)
  • From December 1 in an even year to May 31 in an odd year:
    • Option 1: Pay $5 for a license expiring May 31 of the soonest odd year. (Valid for at most 6 months.)
    • Option 2: Pay $25 for a license expiring May 31 of the next odd year. (Valid for at most 30 months.)

Pay by:

  • Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card only) (Online or in person)
    You will be charged a nonrefundable 2% Convenience Fee.
  • eCheck (Online)
  • Check or money order payable to DCWP (In person or by mail)

You can submit your license application online or in person at the DCWP Licensing Center.
