In-person Open Data Week Events
Open Data Week 2026 featured 38 in-person events, the most since before the COVID-19 pandemic. These events facilitated real-life conversations between New Yorkers about how they use NYC Open Data and allowed for them to engage with the data in novel ways.
Our biggest in-person footprint is of course at the Data Through Design art exhibition and the School of Data conference, but this year’s Open Data Week had additional events that hosted in-person lightning talks or showcases of multiple projects. We invited five presenters at NYC OTI offices to present lightning talks on tools built with NYC Open Data that can help present helpful information to landlords, schoolparents, grocery shoppers and more. Throughout the week, Cornell Tech, the Marron Institute of Urban Management, the City Council Data Team, NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress, Cooper Union’s Data Science for Social Good, and the CUNY Public Interest Tech Pop-Up also hosted showcases of projects.
New Yorkers were invited to engage with data through walking tours in different neighborhoods! Systematica and Transform Transport hosted an event in Brooklyn where participants graded sidewalk segments along data-derived routes based on how pleasant their walking experience was. NYC Parks and Macaulay Honors College hosted a “bioblitz” in Inwood Hill Park (on a beautiful spring day!) to teach participants how to use the iNaturalist app to identify plants and wildlife. And students from Baruch College and NYU led a data-driven walking tour of trash cans, monuments, and trees in Gramercy and Flatiron.
Finally, evening social events including an Open Data Trivia Night and a happy hour hosted by Young Professionals in Transportation helped to cement connections made throughout the week!
