Teaching and Learning at Open Data Week
New York City’s educational community was well represented at this year’s Open Data Week, with over 40 events across Open Data Week and School of Data. From student showcases to faculty drop-in hours, it really demonstrated the many ways Open Data intersects with academic work.
CUNY went all out at Open Data Week with over half of our academically-affiliated events coming from one of their campuses, including our festival keynote. The NYC PIT Pop-Up at the Oculus served as a hub for CUNY’s presence at Open Data Week. In addition to their daily project showcases, their website had a calendar of the CUNY Open Data Week events!
NYU was also a major presence at Open Data Week, particularly their Center for Urban Science + Progress, although the Marron Institute of Urban Management, Tandon School of Engineering, and School of Global Public Health also shared what their community is working on.
But it didn’t end there. Two Cornell Tech students hosted a full day in-person conference that explored AI, robotics, and design. There was a listening party at Barnard of student-produced podcasts. And Cooper Union’s Data Science for Social Good course hosted a reception where students could share their work and network with the Open Data community.
We even had K-12 represented at Open Data Week! A teacher from the Virtual Innovators Academy shared insight on teaching high school students how to use spreadsheets and the Little Red School House hosted an event on mapping access to green spaces.
