Frequently asked questions about Open Data

Data quality is very important to us. If you find an error, let us know.

Excel cannot open datasets that are larger than around 1 million rows, and Google Sheets has a maximum of 10 million total cells. Many of our datasets are bigger than these limits, so if you would like to work with them on your computer you should filter the dataset to export a subset of it.

NYC Open Data partners with the database host Tyler Technologies to store and maintain City data online. If you are creating an account for the first time, refer to "Signing up for an Account." If you are having trouble accessing your account, try resetting your password or filing a ticket with Socrata Support: https://support.socrata.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.

We’re always willing to take a look at a new idea or product. Send us more information through our feedback form or by submitting your project to our Open Data Project Gallery.

We have a number of user guides that can show you the basics of how to use Open Data as well as a monthly virtual class you can join.

Classes can be requested using our form. As a note, if you would like to have an in-person class we do ask that you provide the venue.

The NYC Open Data team is committed to making aggregated City data available for anyone to access online. We cannot accommodate requests to perform individual look-ups or queries for single data points or records available in an Open Data dataset.

Open Data belongs to all New Yorkers. There are no restrictions on the use of Open Data.

You can refer to the “dataset of datasets,” which lists all official datasets on NYC Open Data. You can also view data by City agency.

If the data you are looking for is not in the Open Data catalog, and is not scheduled for future publication in the Open Data plan, please nominate the dataset to be published.

Send us a note via our feedback form and someone on the Open Data team will follow-up. Agencies will be asked whether the data you’re requesting is already collected, in which case it may be added to the Open Data Portal.

Drop us a line through the feedback form and someone from the Open Data team will reach out with assistance. You can also find your agency's Open Data Coordinator if you would like to follow up with them first.

Requests for record removals from the Open Data Portal will be referred to the Open Data Coordinator and Records Access Officer at the City agency that maintains the dataset.

The NYC Open Data Law requires all “public datasets” to be published on the Open Data Portal. Some public datasets include individual names and phone numbers. According to the New York State Committee on Open Government, “Licenses and similar related kinds of records are available to the public, even though they identify particular individuals,” because it is in the public interest to disclose people and companies who do business with or are licensed by the City government. For more information, please see the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and the NYC Open Data Law.
