Mayor de Blasio, Motivate and Citi Announce Continued Expansion of the Citi Bike® Program Further Into Manhattan and Brooklyn

May 19, 2016

New docking stations to be installed further north in Manhattan and in six Brooklyn neighborhoods starting this summer

Station density improvements also coming to 2015 expansion area, including the Upper East Side and Upper West Side

NEW YORK––Mayor de Blasio and Motivate, the operator of Citi Bike, today announced that Citi Bike will continue to expand this summer. This expansion, expected to begin in August, will bring the popular bike share service further north into Manhattan to 110th Street, while expanding its Brooklyn footprint to the neighborhoods of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook. The Mayor and Motivate also announced an agreement to improve density in parts of the program area, providing users with easier, closer access to stations, and more robust, reliable service.

"The recent growth and expansion of Citi Bike is great for New York City, and something we are proud to have helped secure," said Mayor de Blasio. "My former neighbors in Park Slope will certainly welcome the blue bikes this summer, and their arrival in transit-deprived neighborhoods like Red Hook illustrates our continued commitment to strengthening all of our communities and fighting inequality.

This next round of expansion is expected to add about 140 docking stations altogether. Citi Bike will comprise more than 600 docking stations, and will have increased to 10,000 bikes by the end of 2016. In 2015, Citi Bike saw its busiest year ever, with over 10,000,000 total rides taken. The program currently has over 100,000 annual members.

“We are thrilled that Citi Bike continues to grow and grows more convenient to more New Yorkers,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “With today’s announcement, Motivate will both add more neighborhoods to the bike-share network while also bringing more bikes and stations to established neighborhoods. With annual membership at about the cost of six weeks’ use of a monthly Metrocard, even more New Yorkers will have a new, fast and easy transportation option.”

“This year Citi Bike is getting bigger and even better,” said Jay Walder, President and CEO of Motivate, the operators of the Citi Bike program. “We are connecting the City like never before. And as we expand to new neighborhoods, we continue our efforts to invite more and more New Yorkers to try this healthy, convenient and fun way to get around.”

“After a record-breaking 2015, Citi Bike is on pace for an even bigger 2016 with more than a million trips in April alone,” said Citi Head of Public Affairs Edward Skyler. “With the addition of new bikes and the expansion into new neighborhoods, the most innovative and sustainable transportation network in New York is getting even bigger and better.”

“Meeting our City’s transportation challenges requires a wide mix of transportation types,” said Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez. “Biking offers an affordable, healthy, environmentally friendly transportation alternative. The expansion of Citi Bike will help more New Yorkers and visitors alike begin cycling and I’m pleased to see this continued growth. I am particularly glad to see these expansions in Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Park Slope and, especially, Red Hook, which lacks a subway stop.”

“I welcome the expansion of Citi Bike into more Brooklyn neighborhoods,” said State Senator Jesse Hamilton. “Cycling supports the wellness of New Yorkers and the wellness of our planet. This expansion in Brooklyn brings added accessibility to cycling and will be much appreciated.”

“As an avid Citibiker with nearly 500 miles logged and counting, I cannot say enough how thrilled I am at the continued expansion of Citi Bike,” said State Senator Brad Hoylman. “New docking stations and increased station density will mean more users, improved access and greater reliability, providing residents and visitors alike with an effective and healthy transit alternative. I’m grateful to Mayor de Blasio and DOT Commissioner Trottenberg for their efforts to strengthen and expand the Citi Bike program, and I look forward to logging even more miles at stations throughout the city.”

“Brooklynites are clicking into gear with the expansion of Citi Bike, using bicycles to commute to work, visiting attractions across our borough and enjoying a relaxing ride on the weekend,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. “As we continue to build new stations and improve our existing infrastructure, a greater number of our residents will experience the enormous benefits of bicycling both for travel and maintaining physical fitness. As an avid Citi Bike user, I will continue my work to support bicycling by creating safe streets from Bergen Beach to the Brooklyn Bridge.”

“Citi Bike has become a crucial new addition to our city’s transportation network for many New Yorkers, and we must continue to improve access to it,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “I’m glad to see the Department of Transportation and Citi Bike talking with local Community Boards as they expand and improve the network.”

“I'm happy to welcome more Citi Bike stations to the Upper East Side this summer, making the service more convenient for commuters and recreational cyclists in our neighborhoods,” said Assembly Member Dan Quart. “We also look forward to the expansion of the program into new neighborhoods, allowing Upper East Siders to take advantage of the opportunity to bike to new neighborhoods across the city.”

"I'm excited that Citi Bike will be expanded to areas in my district of El Barrio/East Harlem," said Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.  "Now more and more New Yorkers will be able to participate in this successful program and access alternate forms of commuting. I look forward to the continued success of Citi Bike in the hopes that it will be expanded to a five-borough program in the very near future."

"As Citi Bike continues to expand into new communities across the city, more New Yorkers will have a clean, convenient, sustainable and active transportation option," said Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. "I hope to continue working with the DOT and my colleagues to bring this public good to every borough in New York City. Cycling is one of the best ways to get around and as more of us get on bikes, the safer it will become for all."

“My district is at the heart of biking in New York City so we are thrilled to have Citi Bike here at last,” said Council Member Brad Lander. “I am very excited to see Citi Bike stations expanding further into Brooklyn, with a rollout in Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook coming this summer. Citi Bike stations in our neighborhoods will mean a great new transportation resource, especially for short trips that are too far to walk and not well served by existing transit. I look forward to seeing blue bikes rolling through our streets in the near future. So many New Yorkers take advantage of Citi Bike for everything from the daily commute to quick trips to the Greenmarket. I hope to see even further expansions throughout the five boroughs, especially for Brooklynites in Windsor Terrace, Kensington and Boro Park eager for Citi Bike stations of their own. Thank you to Commissioner Trottenberg and the team at Motivate for your efforts to get Citi Bike here. I look forward to working with you on the rollout.”

"We look forward to working with the Department of Transportation and Citi Bike to collaborate with the community to find the best possible locations for new bike share stations that provide a benefit for us all," said Council Member Ben Kallos.

"I'm thrilled to see Citi Bike welcomed as an alternative option of transportation by many New Yorkers. This latest expansion of Citi Bike will bring it to more neighborhoods that are hungry for bike share," said Council Member Mark Levine. "I applaud DOT for working to ensure this program is accessible, and I look forward to more uptown neighborhoods receiving the benefits of this convenient mode of transportation."

"As a cyclist and a complete streets advocate, I feel the positive impact of Citi Bike on New York City streets daily," said Council Member Carlos Menchaca. "Motivate and DOT have listened to the communities in this summer’s expansion zones and are set up for success with the next phase of development. I thank Motivate for being a good employer in my district and I will partner with them and DOT for future expansions. Citi Bike’s discounted rates for NYCHA residents, IDNYC card holders and many credit union participants will help this innovative transit solution reach more riders. Wear your helmet, be safe, have fun!"

“The more options for New Yorkers, the better. I look forward to this expansion making it even more convenient for residents to choose a bicycle as a safe, green, and speedy transportation option,” said Council Member Stephen Levin.

To improve density, DOT and Motivate will bring as many as 42 additional stations to portions of the system installed in 2015, including the Upper East Side and Upper West Side of Manhattan, and portions planned for installation in 2016 and 2017. A denser network helps ensure that a Citi Bike station is always close at hand, providing a more robust, reliable service for seasoned riders and first-time users alike. DOT will be discussing these new “infill” stations with affected communities in the weeks ahead, beginning this Thursday evening, May 19, at Community Board 6 in Brooklyn.

The annual cost of a Citi Bike membership is $155, with an option to pay in installments of $14.95/month with an annual commitment. Motivate recently announced an exciting enhancement to the discounted membership available to NYCHA residents and members of select Community Development Credit Unions: these $60 annual memberships will now be billed in $5 monthly installments instead of one lump payment. IDNYC holders are also eligible to receive a 15 percent discount in their first year of memberships.

Last August, DOT and Motivate announced plans to double the program in size by 2017 from 6,000 to 12,000 bikes and marked the event at a station in Long Island City, making Queens the third borough to feature Citi Bike. Motivate installed 139 stations as part of this expansion in 2015 and now features 470 stations below 86th Street in Manhattan, in Long Island City, Queens and in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, Greenpoint and Williamsburg.
