Transcript: Mayor Adams Calls in for Live Interview on Univision Radio X96.3's "La Gozadera"

Host: Vamos a darle la bienvenida a La Gozadera, nada más y nada menos, al señor alcalde de la ciudad de New York, Eric Adams. Good Morning.

Jonathan Inoa: We're welcoming our mayor of the City of New York, Eric Adams. Bienvenido.

Mayor Eric Adams: Buenos días.

Inoa: There's a few issues, mayor, that we want to talk about today.

Host: Existe una gran preocupación por la calidad de vida en la ciudad y hay gente que está pidiendo más presencia policíaca en los metro. ¿Cómo se puede arreglar esta situación realmente?

Inoa: A lot of people are worried about the quality of life in the city, and the people are asking for more of a police presence in the subways. How can we fix this situation?

Mayor Adams: Well, every day you find that we're facing the most high-profile incidents that happen in the city on our front pages. But in reality, our subway is safe at record levels, decreases in shootings at record levels. As a matter of fact, this quarter was the lowest in history. Our streets are cleaner and New Yorkers are feeling better about our city.

Inoa: Bueno, el alcalde de la ciudad de Nueva York dice que a pesar de los reportes que vemos a veces de la calidad de vida en la ciudad de Nueva York, estamos experimentando un récord en la disminución en el crimen en la ciudad de Nueva York. Translation: Yes, rat. Yes, those of us who have rats in the house, is there a stimulus?

Inoa: Mr. Mayor, Shino Aguakate is asking you that that budget that has been approved in the City of New York, if there is any money for people who have rats in their house?

Mayor Adams: Rat complaints have dropped in the city since I brought on my rat czar. She's done an amazing job. We're containerizing our garbage. We're creating rodent tips on how to fight the rodents because everyone knows that I hate rats.

Host: At least $500 for each rat.

Mayor Adams: The bonus for the families is getting the rats out of their house and learning how to–

Host: I got a question Mr. Mayor. I have a kid and NYC is the home of the largest school district in the country, with over one million students. What do you propose to increase the academic level of our children?

Inoa: La pregunta que hace Mamizuki es que dice que el distrito escolar de Nueva York, que es el más grande en todo el país, con miles de estudiantes, millones de estudiantes, ¿qué vale la propuesta para aumentar el nivel académico de esos estudiantes?

Mayor Adams: We're doing several things. One, we're giving our children– there's going to be universal, free after school programs. Two, we are supporting parents that are bilingual to even give parents assistance in learning how to communicate with school officials.

And three, we are also supporting those bilingual students to give them immersive attention on how to give the– support their needs as they learn English and also, how they continue to move through the educational system.

Inoa: Bueno, el alcalde Eric Adams acaba de mencionar que están haciendo muchas cosas para mejorar la calidad y subir el nivel de los estudiantes. Entre ellas ha sido tener un programa universal de cuidado después de la escuela o de programas después de la escuela para los estudiantes.

Inoa: Mr. Mayor. We've been talking about the crime in the subway. People hear all the time about the stabbings, crime in the whole city. At the same time, they listen to the NYPD statistics about how the crime has been going down. But they say that those numbers don't agree with what they're hearing. What do you have to say? I'm going to say that in Spanish.

Alcalde Eric Adams. Nuestra audiencia siempre está escuchando sobre apuñalamientos, crímenes, balaceras en el subway y en toda la ciudad de Nueva York. Mientras el NYPD tiene las estadísticas que dicen que el crimen está reduciendo en la ciudad de Nueva York. ¿Qué responde usted a eso?

Mayor Adams: Think about this for a moment. We have 4.6 million people that ride [inaudible] every day. We have an average of about five felonies that happen on our subway every day. People don't feel safe because they read about those five felonies. But when you look at it, crime has dropped in the subway system. It continues to. And so that's why I put more cops on the subway so people can start feeling safe to match the speed that we're doing in our numbers.

Inoa: Bueno, millones, según el alcalde Eric Adams, millones de personas utilizan el sistema del subway. Diariamente solamente ocurren cinco, generalmente, crímenes. Host: Before you leave, Mr. Adam, before you leave, [do] you agree with the congestion plan of the governor in this city?

Mayor Adams: Well, that's the job of the governor. The mayor does not make a decision on that. I think we need to have more waivers for working class people, but that is in the hands of the governor and the MTA.

Inoa: El alcalde respondió a la pregunta de Shino Aguakate que le dijo que si le estaba de acuerdo con el peaje por congestión que cobra un peaje a las personas que bajan de la calle 60 hacia abajo en Manhattan.
