Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home Receives Highest Score in State Review of All New York Nursing Homes

New York, NY ― New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) President Alan D. Aviles announced today that the Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home in Staten Island has received the highest score in New York State in a review of critical quality measures at all of the state’s 629 nursing homes.

The rankings by the New York State Department of Health are benchmarks that will be used to determine how to distribute the 2013 Nursing Home Quality Pool, $50 million in funding that will be used to enhance nursing homes with high quality of care standards.

Sea View’s overall score of 84.86 is the maximum score in the benchmarks, which are based on evaluations of 14 quality measures including falls, weight loss, depression, and pain in long-term care patients. Sea View excelled in virtually all areas, with its residents being over 90 percent less likely to experience major injury from falls or to have excessive weight loss than patients at similar institutions.

The DOH ranking is not the first top score the Sea View facility has received this year from an independent ratings group or agency. In March, Sea View was given the highest five star ranking by U.S. News & World Report in that publication’s 2013 list of the nation’s best nursing homes.

“We are very pleased to have scored so well on these measures and the Sea View team is to be commended for its hard work and devotion to the quality of care for our residents,” said Angelo Mascia, Executive Director of Sea View. “Knowing that above all else it is Sea View’s residents who benefit from our performance gives us great satisfaction.”

Sea View Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and Home, with 304 beds, is located in Staten Island's lush Greenbelt. It is known for its long-term care brain injury unit, the first in New York State. Patients undergo intensive rehabilitation with the goals of restoring motor and cognitive functions and maximizing quality of life. The facility also engages patients with Alzheimer's and related dementias by providing purposeful activity, consistency and structure, personalized treatment plans, and a multi-disciplinary team approach to care.
