  • Technology
  • Healthcare

Eligibility

There are many pathways to becoming a CTE teacher, including having:

  • an Associates degree and 2 or more years of work experience
  • a high school degree and 4 or more years of work experience
  • an Associates degree or higher and 2 or more years teaching at the post secondary level
  • 2 or more years of work experience and an industry credential or pass an industry exam

All pathways require you to:

  • Complete workshops
  • Get fingerprint clearance
  • Commit to 3 years of employment
  • Get mentorship during your first year of teaching
  • Get daily supervision for your first 20 days teaching

Steps to becoming a CTE teacher

  1. Choose a CTE industry based on your education and work experience.
  2. Determine your pathway towards a Transitional-A certification. Review the NYSED certification requirements for your selected industry.
  3. Apply to NYSED for Transitional-A certification. All documents related to your certification, like education transcripts and evidence of industry credentials, will be uploaded here.
  4. Apply to NYC Public Schools while your certification processes. Upload your resume and geographic preferences. The initial application review can take two to four weeks.
  5. Complete required workshops for certification in New York State on topics like student safety.
  6. Once your application is accepted, you can access the New Teacher Finder where you can search for open CTE positions and contact principals at your preferred schools. You’ll also be invited to networking events with principals at CTE schools. Refer to CTE Interview Resources.
