Centers of Excellence

WTC Environmental Health Center: Bellevue Hospital oversees one of three Centers of Excellence the New York City public hospital system offers to people suffering from the ill effects of the tragedy on 9/11.

Comprehensive Cardiac Care: the only dedicated aortic surgery service in the metropolitan area, Bellevue has expertise in the care of complex cardiovascular conditions, including ischemic, valvular and congestive heart failure. Designated by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) as a Center for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Acute Myocardial Infarctions and as a Center for Hypothermia (cardiac cooling) Post Cardiac Arrest.

Trauma Center: highest rated (Level 1) regional trauma center, spinal cord injury center, limb re-implantation center, and state-of-the-art Critical Care Service. Separate areas for adult and pediatric traumas.

Designated Stroke Center: urgent 24/7 care for stroke victims by dedicated teams specially trained in the rapid testing, analysis and treatment of stroke victims, providing the best chance for complete recovery.

Cancer Center: high-quality cancer services, including the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of breast, cervical, colorectal, and other cancers.

Regional Perinatal Center: designated by New York State to provide care for the highest level of critically ill infants born in regional hospitals that account for 30% of all births in New York City. As a tertiary referral center for maternal and infant births and intra-hospital transfers of high risk pregnancies, Bellevue is widely recognized for medical excellence.

Bariatric Surgery: The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has collectively designated Bellevue Hospital, Bellevue Bariatric Surgeon Manish S. Parikh, M.D., and the Bellevue Center for Obesity & Weight Management as Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence® (BSCOE). The designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.

HIV Services: Top quality healthcare services for people living with HIV and AIDS are available in Bellevue Hospital's Virology Clinic.

Diabetes Center of Excellence: top quality care management program for diabetic patients. Program includes regular education classes and support groups; special equipment provided by the program to measure blood sugar, weight, and blood pressure and, with the push of a button, send the automated readings to a nurse. The nurse follows up one or more times a week to discuss the readings, design weekly meal plans and develop strategies to help control weight, blood sugar and blood pressure.

Parkinson’s Disease: Bellevue Hospital Center and Kings County Hospital Center have earned recognition from the National Parkinson Foundation as Parkinson’s Disease and Related Movement Disorders Care Centers and Centers of Excellence, respectively. Neurologists and nurse educators assist patients and their families to adjust to make living with the disease more manageable through intensive physical and occupational therapy, onsite counseling and support groups. Kings County Hospital is a designated center of the National Institute of Health for the exploration and study of neuroprotection—a type of therapy to slow down the progression of the disease.

SAFE Center of Excellence: where sexual assault victims receive sensitive care within one hour of their arrival to minimize trauma and reduce the risk that evidence critical to law enforcement will be lost, damaged or overlooked.
