Changing Your Locks

If your locks were damaged or your safety is compromised as a result of a crime, Safe Horizon's Project SAFE may be able to change your locks, free of charge. To be eligible for this service, you must have filed a police report or have been a victim of crime within the last 30 days.

  • Victims of rape or sexual assault need not file a police report to be eligible for this service.
  • Project SAFE changes, replaces, or installs only top locks within 24 to 48 hours. To change the bottom lock, you should contact your landlord, as this lock is their property and responsibility.
  • Your door must be in working condition in order to have the top lock changed or replaced.

For more information and to request assistance, please call Safe Horizon's 24-hour Victims of Crime and their Families hotline at 866-689-HELP (4357). Your information will be taken and sent to Project SAFE. You will receive a phone call during business hours (9 AM - 5 PM), Monday through Friday, and you will be asked to provide your name, date of birth, address, phone number, and a brief explanation of your situation. During this phone call, an appointment may be scheduled to have your locks changed.
