On Friday, June 15, 2018, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the plaque dedication and street sign unveiling ceremony in honor of EMT Yadira Arroyo at Station 26.
A 14-year-veteran of the FDNY,
EMT Arroyo was struck and killed in the line of duty while attempting to stop the theft of her ambulance in March 2017.
“Today, we honor a guardian angel, when people were scared and in pain, Yadira was there,” said Mayor de Blasio. “She understood, service is the highest calling and the spirit of service was the force animating everything she did.”
“In her 14 years of service, Yadira exemplified that fact, she made those around her better, she kept them safe, and she was always there for her patients, treating them at their most desperate moments,” said Fire Commissioner Nigro. “This plaque is a symbol to the community of what Yadira stood for and it is a visible reminder that the FDNY will always answer the call for help.”
Following the plaque dedication ceremony, a street was dedicated in EMT Arroyo’s name in remembrance of her commitment to the Bronx community.
EMT Arroyo is the 8th member of FDNY EMS to die in the line of duty, and the 1146th member of the Department to make the Supreme Sacrifice while serving our city.
