On Thursday, April 18, 2019, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the graduation ceremony for 187 Probationary Firefighters.
Among the graduates is Probationary Firefighter Aric Tegtmeier, who follows in the footsteps of his father, Firefighter Paul Tegtmeier, one of the 343 FDNY members killed on September 11th.
“After my father passed away, the firehouse took care of my family and me. My father loved this job. He always came home happy.” said Probationary Firefighter Tegtmeier. “I know he would be proud of me and that’s all I could ever hope for. He is my inspiration and he keeps pushing me forward every day.”
“It’s clear that Paul Tegtmeier instilled the notions of bravery and service in his son,” said Commissioner Nigro. “With his graduation, he’s made his father, and all of us, incredibly proud.”
During their time at the FDNY Training Academy, the class was extensively trained in all aspects of their job as Firefighters, including fire suppression and medical response, hazardous materials, collapse and confined space rescue training, auto extrication, building inspections, and procedures for engine and ladder operations.
“Though you are graduating today, your education is far from over. The next stage of learning is about to begin,” said Chief of Department John Sudnik. “You will work closely with your company, and you will become a part of the family in your firehouse. The bonds you make there will truly last a lifetime.”
“My squad was a huge contribution to my success. We studied together every day. Firefighting runs in my family and I have seen how happy the members are on a daily basis,” said class Valedictorian, Probationary Firefighter Joshua Kistler. “I want to help people, and with the skills I have learned in the Academy, I am ready to do that.”
The graduating class of Probationary Firefighters also represents the growing diversity of the Department. The class includes 5 women; and people of color comprise 34% of the class, with 11% identifying as Black, 17% as Hispanic, and 5% as Asian.
“I love this Department and I can’t wait to do my part for this great city,” said FDNY Probationary Firefighter Briana Ciurcina. “Everyone here works together and is willing to help out. I am ready to go out into the field and do my part.”
