February 25, 2025

The FDNY welcomed its latest class of probationary emergency medical technicians following a graduation ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn.

"You need only look at the uniforms you wear and the patches on your sleeves to know you are among the best and the bravest," FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. "You are part of the FDNY. Being an FDNY EMT is a tremendous responsibility. It is a privilege, and it is an honor. You are part of the FDNY family, and we have your back."

Chief of Department John Esposito added: "Your work might not always be recognized by the public, but I assure you that every patient you help will remember you. To them, you are not just an EMT, you are the person who showed up when they needed it the most."

Chief of EMS Operations Michael Fields said: "The lessons you have learned at the EMS Academy are not just theories; they are tools that will empower you to save lives, comfort the afflicted and make a meaningful difference in the world. Your role is crucial, and the impact you will have on the lives of those you serve cannot be overstated."

This class of probationary EMTs includes 20 members from the FDNY's Youth Alumni Program and seven U.S. military veterans. The EMTs trained at the FDNY's EMS Academy at Fort Totten, learning CPR, patient medical and trauma assessments, oxygen and ventilation skills, management of hypotension and fractures, spinal immobilization, emergency childbirth, and emergency vehicle operation.

The new EMTs will be assigned to units throughout New York City.
